Melbourne coach Kevin Foote has slammed the leniency of a two-week suspension handed to Fijian Drua forward Jone Koroiduadua for what he described as a “malicious” headbutt, after a judiciary panel ruled it had only “made limited contact with the head” of Rebels hooker Alex Mafi.
The FPRC – comprising Stephen Hardy , Ofisa Tonu’u and Stefan Terblanche – ruled the Lomani incident was considered a serious “top-end” offence, and his ban started at 10 weeks, before being reduced due to mitigating factors. Koroiduadua’s six-week suspension was halved because he pleaded guilty, and then reduced by a further week because it was eligible, as a low-end offence, for a further discount if the sanction would “be wholly disproportionate to the level and type of offending involved”.“To that end, the Foul Play Review Committee considered a sanction of three weeks would have been wholly disproportionate to the level and type of offending involved,” Hardy said.
The Rebels reluctantly accepted the one-week suspension because if they had fought the “persistent offending” charge and lost, Hodge could have got two weeks.“How does Hodgey get a red card after a team foul and a yellow foul, and it’s two weeks, and that gets two weeks? It doesn’t make any sense,” Foote said.
