Border closures and lockdowns can work for a period of time but are “obviously not sustainable, economically or socially” according to National University of Singapore Professor profdalefisher

Border closures and lockdowns can work for a period of time but are “obviously not sustainable, economically or socially” according to National University of Singapore Professor Dale Fisher.

Professor Fisher told Sky News he doesn’t believe in the “bunker down and wait for a vaccine happy ending” approach to deal with the threat posed by the coronavirus. He said the approach has really got to be “living with the virus”. “And I think if that’s not realised sooner, it will be realised later”. The professor said it shouldn’t be attempted to try and make keeping borders shut a sustainable option. “It’s really a mechanism to buy time, just as is lockdown”.

Labor needs 'right balance' on policy to win elections | Sky News AustraliaShadow Agriculture and Resources Minister Joel Fitzgibbon says he will spend “every waking hour” to ensure Anthony Albanese becomes the next prime minister but Labor needs to appeal to its traditional base.\n\nMr Fitzgibbon recently told a podcast he fears the Labor Party may end up splitting due to internal divisions on policy and a shift from its traditional base.\n\n“I spend every waking hour of every day focusing on one thing in political terms, and that is ensuring Labor wins the election and Anthony Albanese becomes the next prime minister,” Mr Fitzgibbon told Sky News.\n\n“Because I believe Australia needs a Labor government even more so because of the impacts of Covid on so many Australians.\n\n“To win an election we need to get the right balance across a whole range of demographics and across city and regional areas.\n\n“I just don’t accept this proposition that publicly having contested ideas in such a large political party is a bad thing, in fact I think it’s a vibrant thing.\n\n“All I am arguing for is a balance suite of policies and I want to send a very clear message to our traditional base.\n\n“The Labor Party is on their side, the Labor Party has their back and the Labor Party sees a future for them.”\n\n fitzhunter AlboMP aclennell I’m not voting for either major party. fitzhunter AlboMP aclennell We do really need a big change. this government has to be the most corrupt I have ever seen. and I have seen many government partys in power but the LNP would take some beating. worst we have ever had. fitzhunter AlboMP aclennell He's ambitious for AlboMP 😉

PM must 'accept responsibility and apologise' for aged care catastrophe | Sky News AustraliaShadow Ageing Minister Julie Collins is calling on the Prime Minister to “accept responsibility, apologise to families and say what and where the government has gone wrong and how they are fixing it”. \n\nIn response to the increasing coronavirus death toll in the aged care sector, Ms Collins said it was clear “the government didn’t do enough soon enough, and we’re now seeing tragic consequences of that”. \n\n“The federal government funds aged care, regulates aged care, was clearly in charge of aged care across Australia and should have been more prepared for aged care outbreaks,” she said. \n\n“To duck and weave and try to say that somehow he is not responsible for aged care I think is disingenuous and I think the families and loved ones of all those that have been impacted in Victorian and New South Wales aged care facilities deserve better from the Prime Minister.” \n\nMs Collins told Sky News she had little faith in the federal government to implement recommendations outlined in the aged care royal commission. \n\n“It hasn’t implemented [recommendations from] the interim report in full and I don’t know how the public can have any faith that the Prime Minister and the aged care system in Australia is where it needs to be,” she said. \n\n“I think what we’ll see from the government is the usual smoke and mirrors.” \n JulieCollinsMP The PM cannot say that - because they are not fixing the COVID 19 and age care 'problem. NSW should not have to 'bear the brunt of hotel quarantine' | Sky News AustraliaLiberal Senator Andrew Bragg says the states and territories need to 'share the burden' of hotel quarantine for returned travellers.\n\nMr Bragg said hotel quarantine in NSW was at a bit of a “choke point” with approximately 350 people held in mandatory isolation each day.\n\n“One of the most successful components of our strategy to beat the coronavirus has been closing international borders,” the Senator acknowledged.\n\n“We do need to see the states providing more capacity on hotel quarantine so we can have higher entrance into Australia”.\n\nHis comments responded to a push to open international borders and allow Australians to travel overseas at their own risk with hotel quarantine upon return.\n\nIn contrast, Labor MP Anika Wells said, “we’ve always got to balance … public health and safety with the best of the medical advice and the best industry advice.”\n\n“If Qantas is working on the basis that international borders won’t open until mid-next year, then that’s what we should be focusing on,' she said.\n\nImage: AP ajamesbragg Like sharing cruise ship passengers by air?

Biden, Harris are turning DNC into anti-Trump campaign | Sky News AustraliaUS Studies Centre Senior Advisor Jared Mondschein says presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris “have really gone out of their way to make this referendum on President Trump”. \n\n“Senator Harris is well known for being a charismatic and forceful speaker and I think we can expect more of that from her tonight,” Mr Mondschein told Sky News. \n\n“She’s probably going to articulate to a great extent the difference between her and her campaign with Joe Biden and President Trump.\n\n“They’re not talking about major policy differences … taxes … health care too much, they’re really just talking about the difference in their personalities and in their natures.\n\n“That is the campaign Joe Biden ran on when he was running against the Democrats and it’s the campaign he’s still running today against President Trump.” \n\nImage: AP JoeBiden KamalaHarris JoeBiden KamalaHarris As it should be. Sending Victorians back into COVID hotspots could be more dangerous for SA | Sky News AustraliaPreventing Victorians from crossing into South Australia could force them back into COVID-19 hotspots increasing the risk of the virus spreading to the border communities, according to Liberal MP Tony Pasin.\n\nThe South Australian government will enforce a hard closure of its Victorian border on Friday, a drastic step away from current arrangements that allow residents of border communities to travel inter-state with regular COVID-19 testing.\n\n“I just fear that we’ve got ourselves in a situation now where risk adverse decisions are being made without regard for the economic consequences,” Mr Pasin told Sky News host Chris Kenny.\n\nMr Pasin – whose federal electorate of Barker encompasses South Australian border communities – said it would be “much more risky” for those cross-border towns if Victorians were forced out than if strict arrangements were made for inter-state travel.\n\n“By forcing Victorians who would otherwise obtain their health services or other services from places like Mount Gambier … they (could) move back into Victoria where the disease load’s more prevalent,” he said.\n\n“The solution here cannot be to lock communities away from each other.”\n\nImage: News Corp Australia What a load of... Where are you hiring opinion editors? Kindy? Why Hydroxychloroquine can save life? Why none of the CCP officers gets the virus? Because they used Hydroxy chloroquine in December 2019 and controlled all the media and WHO to lie to the world saying Hydroxy is no use at all. Victoria / South Australia border closures will actually cause increase in corona virus cases rather than eliminate them. Open the SA border now !
