MORNING BRIEFING: For the first time, thousands of teachers from public and Catholic schools across New South Wales are refusing to work in protest over pay and staff shortages.

Thousands of teachers from public schools and Catholic schools across New South Wales are refusing to work today in protest over pay and staff shortages. The NSW Teachers Federation has described the government's three per cent pay offer as "an insult" that falls below inflation. This is the third lot of industrial action by teachers in seven months.

The union said there were almost 2,000 staff vacancies across the state, with more than half of those in regional areas.Health Minister Brad Hazzard is urging everyone to protect themselves against influenza, with the state's free vaccine program being extended by two weeks. Transport Minister David Elliott yesterday offered to spend $264 million to carry out the modifications demanded by the union. The government is also demanding that the union surrenders its right to veto any new technology or practices.

The NSW Premier has maintained that no suitable candidate was found in an initial recruitment push for a coveted job as the state's trade commissioner in New York. Ms Brown said she was then ordered by the government to cease the recruitment process before the position was readvertised and Mr Barilaro was named as the successful candidate."Amy Brown provided advice that there was no suitable candidate in the first recruitment round," a spokesperson for the Premier said in a statement.

Hey there. Change 'need to know' comment in the article. As the article doesn't talk of impacts on the city, it doesn't provide information needed

Should be on $100 an hour! $200 + to get a tradie to walk in your door!

Based on student performance even being in the classroom they appear to be on strike, more like overpaid by sitters.

Just have a quick look at the timelines of any anti-teacher gronks on here. You’ll see red flags everywhere, and not the “Marxist” ones.

Us teachers in Australia are among the highest paid worldwide. A NSW CRT gets $460 per day! Teacher unions need a bit of perspective. Inflation is here because of covid policies they supported. You can't expect others to continue to pay for problems of your own creation.

“Teachers strike after being told to take yet another pay cut” there, fixed it for ya.

Private schools’ school term already ended last week, so the teachers are supposed to be on holidays, they don’t work today anyway

Cos private teachers aren’t being paid enough when their principals are putting in their own personal pools

Teachers? So $90000+ p/a is not enough? Arguing against the guaranteed 3% wage rise when the country has inflation issues? If wages rise so do goods and services to counteract..the country will end up in a rolling snowball effect

Pay them!

'Staying home' or 'walking out to fight for a fair go for themselves and their students? Please don't imply they are not going to school because they feel like sleeping in and binge-watching TV. 🙄 IStandWithTeachers today.

I had a teacher who liked a bit of “joint” action. Politics with a spliff. Groovy stuff on a weekend. Long dead now, but he was spot on about the trend to fascism & totalitarianism Watch for State Control, he said. People power, his motto. This was back in the 70’s Great teacher

Second highest paid teachers, on average, in Australia behind NT. Another politically motivated strike in a Liberal state. These militant Labor backed unions must be stopped & their motivations exposed.

OK ..where are the interviews with Liberal MPs telling us that this is unreasonable and they are all Marxists ?

because it is ALL about the kids! well that what we hear at every six month strike action for taxpayers to be slugged more when they themselves have been sitting on stagnant wages for years
