More than 90 per cent of coral surveyed on the Great Barrier Reef suffered some form of bleaching over the past summer. While action on climate change is slow, researchers are racing to find ways to restore reefs.

What will the Great Barrier Reef look like at the end of this century if sea temperatures continue to rise?

The latest was as recently as this summer, when 91 per cent of the reef from the Torres Strait to east of Gladstone, off the coast of Queensland, was impacted. While the 2021–22 bleaching event did not lead to coral mortality, it has scientists concerned. "What we're trying to do is look at those corals that probably will survive and what those future reefs might look like after a bleaching event.Ms Clark has taken corals from different habitats on the reef at Heron Island, about 50 kilometres off the central Queensland coast, to see how they grow in different environments. In the laboratory, she takes three-dimensional photographs of the specimens and studies their physiology and genetics.

While this approach to survival may sound sensible, the problem is that the process stops corals from calcifying.Hard corals take calcium from the seawater to form their limestone outer skeletons, the basis of coral reefs.

“The reef is dying!!” argument was disproved years ago but you can count on the ABC to resuscitate it. Coral survives at much higher temps. Coral thrives at the mouth of the sediment-rich Amazon. Coral adapts to new conditions but don’t expect the ABC to report this faithfully.

Should read 'As climate change continues to cause rising sea temperatures around the GBR...'

CLIMATE CHA|NGE is waiting for no one!

Reported for misinformation.

Considering the amount of nuclear waste pumped into the ocean I would say it's not just the sealife.

fakenews

A carbon tax destroying Australian business should fix the problem.

Look up 'natural selection'. Every species alive today is here because another made way for it or evolved.

It will mean mass extinction of many species of coral that can’t adapt

Did you know the reef runs north to south? Goes what happens to the ocean temperature as you approach the equator. If that's too hard, go take a swim off Hobart.

There are corals off the coast of New Guinea flourishing in waters 2degs warmer ABC. They don't get bleached cause they're 20ft down.

More BS ... Corals can and do adapt to changing Ts and exist anywhere from 24 to 34C but may cortals can exist up to 40C!!! The reef will dapt just as reefs in much warmer waters do all around the world

The Great Barrier Reef is bigger than Norway (344 400 vs 323 802 sq kms). Both span about 18 degrees of latitude. It is misleading to talk about ‘the reef’ as if it is just one chunk of coral you can snorkel around.

No one trusts or believes you defundtheABC

Murdoch style “don’t panic”. ABC trust chart↘️📉👎🔻

No one trusts your reports on reef health any longer, ABC.

'If' ain't settled science ABC, it's junk science 😂🤦‍♀️ 'Dr Cantin says that if temperatures hit 3 degrees Celsius above what was measured in pre-industrial times, coral will have a hard time surviving global warming over the next 50 years.'

They migrate …natural survival instinct. Volcanoes create destroy environments over time.

The GBR is doing just fine, stop the hype.

Google: For Reef Alarmists And Their Media Lackeys, Too Much Coral Is Not Enough Google: Media Hypes False Claim That Climate Change Is Killing Off Coral Google: “RECORD-HIGH” CORAL COVERAGE ACROSS THE GREAT BARRIER REEF: CLAIMS OF IMPENDING EXTINCTION PROVEN FALSE

Fail to mention same type of corals live on 2000km of reefs running north to south......5 degree C water temp difference in that 2000km.....the coral will be fine......

You guys have been scaremongering the reef for the last 50 years and have been wrong every time!

gosh this makes me sad
