Nurses and carers are experiencing “unspeakable grief” and 'trauma', with members having no access to PPE and dealing with the stress and pressure of low levels of staff, says Health Services Union branch secretary Diana Asmar.

Aged care workers felt like they were on bottom decks of the "Titanic" as they watched so many residents they cared for die of COVID-19, the Aged Care Royal Commission heard.

Because families had been excluded from aged care facilities, staff were carrying a bigger emotional load supporting residents. “A lot of our members unfortunately are suffering with the COVID experience of their residents that they know who have been dying,” Ms Asmar said. "I didn’t think we would sink any lower following the royal commission findings from last year and yet we have. In my opinion, hundreds of residents are, and will, die prematurely because people have failed to act.Professor Ibrahim told the commission that when he voiced concerns he was told everything was under control, "that I’m simply overreacting and causing panic".
