Hundreds of aged care residents are dying - and will die - prematurely because of governments' failure to act, one of Australia’s most experienced aged care experts told the aged care royal commission | juliepower

Hundreds of aged care residents are dying - and will die - prematurely because of governments' failure to act, one of Australia’s most experienced aged care experts told the aged care royal commission on Wednesday morning.Professor Joseph Ibrahim has urged the federal government to put resources into aged care homes. His comments come as the toll rises. Of the nation's 331 deaths from COVID-19 recorded on Tuesday, 220 deaths occurred in aged care, including 189 in Victoria.

"The human misery and suffering must be acknowledged. This is the worst disaster that is still unfolding before my eyes and it's the worst in my entire career," Professor Ibrahim said."I didn't think we would sink any lower following the royal commission findings from last year and yet we have. In my opinion, hundreds of residents are, and will, die prematurely because people have failed to act. There's a lack of ... urgency.

Professor Ibrahim told the commission that, when he voiced his concerns he was told everything was under control, "that I'm simply overreacting and causing panic". "We have the knowledge to do better. We fail because we have treated residents as second-class citizens. There's an absence of accountability. There still is and there [are] no consequences for failing to deliver good care in aged care," he said.

Not only in NSW some might say. Dan's fault. Countries whose population is characterised by an aging population should invest in Gerontological studies to establish the impacts and implications of Covid-19 on Gerontological support mechanisms. The sooner this is integrated in the 2020 research framework the better.
