Although the result of the Eden-Monaro by-election remains unclear, the Coalition has been able to break the typical trend against governments in by-elections according to Liberal candidate for Eden-Monaro Dr Fiona Kotvojs.

The Eden-Monaro by-election remains on knife’s edge after the Liberals have exceeded expectations, forcing the election result down to pre-polls and postal votes. Dr Kotvojs said ideally it would be pleasing to declare a victory on the night, but given the average swing against governments has been 3.5 per cent at by-elections, “so far, we’re going the other way”.

Bushfires played a massive role in the debate in the lead-up to the by-election, with both candidates having a personal connection to the devastation caused over the summer. “This has been a tough year,” Dr Kotvojs declared. “It’s really important that we work together as a community, and that we deal with these issues”. Dr Kotvojs concluded by praising all 14 candidates in the election who she said “all wanted to do the best for our community”.
