The tumultuous two-month campaign for the ultra-marginal seat of Eden-Monaro has come to a close as voters cast their ballots in an by-election mired by Coalition infighting and leadership questions around Opposition leader Anthony Albanese.

Labor’s candidate, Bega Mayor Kristy McBain, was quickly drafted by Mr Albanese, and the election soon shifted to the important issue of bushfires. The contest between Ms McBain and Liberal candidate Dr Fiona Kotvojs has evolved into a proxy referendum on Mr Albanese’s leadership, with speculation Labor needs to win comfortably for any leadership tensions to subside. Polling suggests Ms McBain is slightly ahead of Dr Kotvojs, with 38.1 per cent of the primary vote to 37.5 per cent.

Don't write off the Liberals in Eden-Monaro: Barilaro | Sky News AustraliaNSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro says he's 'not writing off the Liberals' in Eden-Monaro, denying claims he was urging voters to preference Labor before the Liberal candidate. \n\n'I've been telling people to vote one Trevor Hicks. Simple as that,' Mr Barilaro said.\n\n'Our how to vote card has the Liberal Party second. \n\n'It's always been a bellwether seat. They know down here you get stuff done when you're in government and they may experiment with that two years out from a general election.'\n\nMr Barilaro said much of the speculation was likely caused by his long-standing friendship with former member for Eden-Monaro and Labor MP Mike Kelly.\n\n'Just because we come from two different parties, doesn't mean you can't make friends across the political isle,' he said.\n\nWhile a Labor hold would pave the way for Mr Barilaro to run for the seat at the next federal election, the NSW MP said he wasn't sure whether he 'had enough fight' in him for another tilt. \n\n'I've got a four-and-a-half year old who misses dad and that was a big part of the reason I didn't run this time,' he said.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia
