.JohnBarilaroMP says early figures indicate the Liberals are on the cusp of a historic victory in the federal seat of Eden Monaro

NSW Deputy Prime Minister John Barilaro says early figures indicate the Liberals are on the cusp of a historic victory in the federal seat of Eden Monaro. The seat of Eden-Monaro was left vacant after Labor MP Mike Kelly retired, citing long-standing health issues. Labor holds the seat by a wafer-thin margin of 0.9 per cent and will be vulnerable if there is a swing against the opposition.

If Liberal candidate Fiona Kotvojs won the seat, it would be the first time in over 100 years a government has won a seat off an opposition in a by-election. Mr Barilaro told Sky News he sensed a great deal of goodwill towards the government when he was on the hustings. "I think the Liberal Party is doing exceptionally well in Queanbeyan, which you would have thought they would have struggled,” he said. “I believe the Liberals will win this. I think they will get there.

Don't write off the Liberals in Eden-Monaro: Barilaro | Sky News AustraliaNSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro says he's 'not writing off the Liberals' in Eden-Monaro, denying claims he was urging voters to preference Labor before the Liberal candidate. \n\n'I've been telling people to vote one Trevor Hicks. Simple as that,' Mr Barilaro said.\n\n'Our how to vote card has the Liberal Party second. \n\n'It's always been a bellwether seat. They know down here you get stuff done when you're in government and they may experiment with that two years out from a general election.'\n\nMr Barilaro said much of the speculation was likely caused by his long-standing friendship with former member for Eden-Monaro and Labor MP Mike Kelly.\n\n'Just because we come from two different parties, doesn't mean you can't make friends across the political isle,' he said.\n\nWhile a Labor hold would pave the way for Mr Barilaro to run for the seat at the next federal election, the NSW MP said he wasn't sure whether he 'had enough fight' in him for another tilt. \n\n'I've got a four-and-a-half year old who misses dad and that was a big part of the reason I didn't run this time,' he said.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia

Eden-Monaro voters want community ‘rebuild and recovery’: Kotvojs | Sky News AustraliaLiberal candidate for Eden-Monaro Dr Fiona Kotvojs says the major issues across the electorate involve the recovery and rebuilding of communities from the fires, floods, droughts and COVID-19. \n\nIn a wide-ranging interview with Sky news host Chris Kenny, Dr Kotvojs denied claims which surfaced on Thursday that NSW Nationals leader John Barilaro was undermining the Liberals’ bid to win the by-election by asking voters to preference Labor ahead of herself. \n\n'Both John Barilaro and Trevor Hicks have made it very clear the preferences for the Nationals are going to the Liberals,' Dr Kotvojs said. \n\n'Both of them have made that statement very clearly this morning'. \n\nDr Kotvojs also said Snowy 2.0 was a 'fantastic project'. \n\n'What it does on a federal level, and a national level, is it firms up the renewables'. \n\n'It's a really great project in terms of energy, and locally for Eden-Monero, it's great in terms of the jobs it produces'. \n\nDr Kotvojs said she is 'really happy' to represent the Liberal Party in the upcoming by-election on Saturday. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia Does her mouth move ScoMo's pork barrelling press conferences?🤔 What party is he part of When were the fires ? Man arrested over spam emails targeting Eden-Monaro candidateA Sydney man has been arrested after targeting voters in the Eden-Monaro byelection with offensive spam emails. I read elsewhere, to her credit, that Fiona Kotvojs condemned the emails targetting Kristy McBain too. A typical Trump move would have been to continue the circulation. Your heading seems misleading. Was any candidate apart from Kirsty McBain trageted? Why does the headline use the plural “candidates” when the story itself states that only one candidate was the target?
