English cricket legend “Deadly” Derek Underwood has passed away aged 78, his former county club Kent has confirmed. Underwood was statistically England’s greatest ever spinner, his 297 wickets well clear of the country’s next most prolific slow bowler, Graeme Swann, who had 255. An exact cause of death has not been shared with the public. “Kent Cricket is in mourning following the death of one of the icons of the club, Derek Underwood, at the age of 78,” Kent said.

Among many highs, including 17 five-wicket Test hauls, four times against Australia, and six 10-wicket matches, he is most fondly remembered for a starring role in a classic Ashes finish at the Oval in 1968. With a downpour threatening to preserve Australia’s 2-1 series lead, members of the crowd helped with the mopping up work to allow Colin Cowdrey’s side little more than half-an-hour to take the six wickets they needed for victory.
