In an uncharacteristic move that has left him torn between feelings of guilt and gratitude, the AFL Players Association boss Paul Marsh is taking an extended break from the game.
“If I’m being honest, I’m pretty burnt out,” admitted Marsh this week. “They first raised it on the back of COVID and then Dad’s passing.“I’m grateful now, but I was initially resistant. I haven’t felt comfortable about leaving in the middle of the season, and I’m sure there will be a moment where it seems like a bad look to be playing golf in Europe while the season is going. I was adamant a month away would be adequate, but they wouldn’t allow it.
Dangerfield said: “The decision had to be taken away from him because, eventually, he’ll burn himself out, and he’ll walk, and frankly, we can’t afford that. What makes him such a great leader is that he’s always on, so it’s also the reason he needs a proper break. Marsh’s first month’s agenda includes Italy and a golfing tour of Ireland with his wife Jane. Later comes a family birthday celebrated in Singapore. But, “I can’t do nothing for three months,” Marsh earlier this year told Dangerfield, “I’m going to get bored.”
