Former opposition leader Matthew Guy’s poor image among voters, Malcolm Turnbull’s dumping as prime minister and a lopsided focus on law-and-order issues all contributed to the party’s heavy loss at November's state election, an internal review has found.
“Defined leadership at a state level is critical,” he said in his preliminary election review. “Like all electorally successful leaders in both sides of politics in Victoria, including Jeff Kennett, Andrews built a sufficient public perception as a competent, hard-working premier who had a plan and a team and who knew what he wanted to do and how to do it.
“To the extent that there was a definition around the leader, there tended to be some negatives around that, and they were the negatives that Labor had set out,” Mr Nutt said.revealed a year before the election campaign that Mr Guy had, with others, dined over lobster and Penfolds Grange with Tony Madafferi, who police suspect is the leader of the Melbourne mafia. Mr Madafferi has never been charged with a crime and denies any wrongdoing.
The applause followed an acknowledgement by Michael O’Brien, who has replaced him as Opposition Leader.
