Anne Hamilton-Byrne founded The Family, which drugged and subjected children to beatings - but she was never prosecuted for the abuse. 9News

Mr De Man said the cult started in 1963 in Melbourne where Hamilton-Byrne, along with her husband, Bill, collected numerous children - some through adoption scams, some born to cult members and others handed over by single mothers - to raise as their own.

Former detective Lex De Man said the question that he would live with for the rest of his life was why Hamilton-Byrne was never jailed for her crimes. The children, who were made to wear identical outfits, were told by Hamilton-Byrne that they were going to help save the world after an impending apocalypse - a vision which had come to Hamilton-Byrne under the influence of LSD.

“I have contact with a lot of survivors. I don’t call them victims, they are survivors. They are an amazing group of young adults and I have nothing but pure admiration the way they have moved on. Still, they were brought up in a very bizarre world by a very evil woman.”
