Labor's caucus has voted to support three of the government's free trade agreements at a special meeting on Thursday morning. The opposition had been divided on the deals with Indonesia, Peru and Hong Kong. Trade unions had pressured Labor MPs to reject the deal, fearing it could allow the importation of foreign labour and for foreign companies to sue the Australian government.

Backbencher Ed Husic told Sky News on Thursday he respects union input into the debate but closer ties with Indonesia are vital. “Not only are they our nearest neighbour, but one that will become increasingly important economically when you look at the expected growth of Indonesia over the next few years,” he said on Thursday. “People recognize that these agreements do play a special role in boosting economic activity in the economy and strengthening relationships across borders.
