The Morrison government has voted against a Greens and Labor-led attempt to declare a climate emergency, shrugging it off as 'symbolic'

The Greens also attempted to stage a stunt highlighting climate change in Canberra on Tuesday - unveiling a hot air balloon branded with warnings.

Greens MP Adam Bandt told reporters recognising the climate emergency was not aimed at"condemning" the government. He said drought, unprecedented fires and damage to the Great Barrier reef showed the threat posed by global warming was already gripping the nation. A Climate Change Emergency hot air balloon during a Climate Change rally outside Parliament House in Canberra.“It is simply undeniable that we are in the middle of a climate change emergency,” he said.

"Whilst some in this place are keen on symbolism we are keen on real and meaningful action," he told Parliament. "All of this is focused on achieving our emission reduction obligations whilst we keep a strong economy."

It was mostly QLD coal that kept them in government. We’re just not a very forward looking nation. That’s the sad truth. Maybe we should also outlaw email so people send everything via mail again. And block Spotify so we can go back to the big black records ...

There is no climate emergency. There is, however, an environmental one. Lets clean the oceans of plastics and reduce our usage of non-recycleable materials.

Then why vote it down?

Geez, there must be some serious payback to the likes of Rinhart and fossil fuel donors to the LNP, plus the promise of lucrative jobs after they are kicked out of parliament.

As per the election the 'climate election apparently' get over it SBS your side lost

markbjardine What a pack of morons. Climate emergency is bullshit. What about the Farmer Emergency. What is fucking SBS doing about that

I’d call it a gimmick.

Talking about symbolism and that sbsnews report of right wing racist NAZIs at the footy in Europe; could you please play this song loud for them and MathiasCormann for me, loud. Thanks 😊

So clearly ScottMorrisonMP isn’t interested in listening to what many Australians are asking for. Scott you just lost me as a supporter-and a voter!!

Old smelly people ?

On that Shisha story SBSNews a little bit symbolic considering 8.8 Million early deaths are caused from passing cars and fossil fuels ++ pollution Cough Cough

It’s all in the the hands of Lord god bless you sco mo you fud.....

Just another example of the ScottMorrisonMP LiberalAus Government not taking climate change seriously.

'Emergency' 🙄 are these adults or what? Climate Emergency wank fest.. why not move a motion to make it rain.. both as useless as each other.. do something constructive girl's dicks 🙄

Only symbolic because the government refuse to act

Good and it is symbolic with out a doubt

How about we start looking after our food bowl, our farmers, problems of today, not key targets for the future !

Drought is symbolic as well

How about stop stuffing around with this and declare a financial emergency instead .. the impact is coming in the 12 month not 12 years ..

🤦🏼‍♂️ ClimateActionNow

Strange that Labor didn't take this policy to the last election, i mean if was so urgent ? Climate Change is the Left's version of the Riechstag Fire, there is still rain, snow , ice, and no mass starvation, or rapid sea level rise, what i'm trying to say is Al Gore was wrong.

And your stupid job is symbolic

🤣🤣🤣 I guess Adam Bandt chickened out and couldn't declare the emergency himself unless he was scared of being embarrassed. This is gold, good thing Scomo didn't sell us out. auspol
