The Opposition seized on a letter from Dr Fred Betros, the head of the department of surgery across both hospitals, who wrote that he had been advised of a "planned reduction in elective surgical services for 2020 ... to bring the budget back from a significant overspend." “Why are the services to be reduced where the community is already the most disadvantaged … the reported direction represents a consistent abuse of a disadvantaged community in Western Sydney,” Dr Hanney wrote.he had asked the health ministry to discuss the issue with the hosptial's management " to make sure doctors' views are considered and sensible decisions are made".
