Divisions are emerging within Labor ranks over how Australia should approach its relationship with China.

Veteran Labor Senator Kim Carr has written a new article for a Labor-based publication, throwing his support behind Beijing and suggesting greater collaboration with Chinese researchers.

Senator Carr also suggests the nation's security agencies are "arbitrarily" targeting China when other authoritarian states, like Russia, also pose threats. Senator Kimberly Kitching has expressed "deep concerns", defending Australia's right to pursue a "values-based" relationship with China.
