Protesters rallying in support of an indigenous man shot and killed by NT police shut down Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall this afternoon.

“During that time a struggle ensued and two shots were fired and he sadly passed away later,” Acting Deputy Commissioner Michael White told reporters on Sunday. “My understanding is he was armed with a weapon.”

Police said an altercation occurred between Walker and one of the officers, resulting in an officer being stabbed in the shoulder and then shooting his firearm, wounding the man. Kumanjayi Walker, 19, was shot and killed by police in the remote community of Yuendumu on Saturday. The medical staff had left the community after a series of break-ins and an ambulance from a neighbouring community was called to attend the scene. The shooting, which is under investigation by police, the coroner and the NT Independent Commission Against Corruption, has inflamed tensions in the tiny community of 800 people and sparked protests around the country.“I went outside and I saw them drag him by the leg and chucked him in the paddy wagon,” resident Senita Granites told. “He wasn’t even moving when he was dragged out from the house by the leg. He wasn’t even carried.
