Jacinda Ardern said her country's economic situation compares 'very, very well' to Australia, even as New Zealand recorded its worst quarterly GDP figures in modern history.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said her country's economic situation compares"very, very well" to Australia, even as it recorded its worst quarterly GDP figures in modern history.

The quarterly result covers the majority of New Zealand's lockdown to fight COVID-19, a period when retail, construction and tourism industries were forced to close. "That's in spite of the fact international tourism means twice as much to us as it does for Australia." "Our strategy was to go ahead and to go early to get on top of the virus and then in the September quarter you'll see the rebound from that."Comparisons to Australia are often made in New Zealand, where getting one over the trans-Tasman rivals is a common aspiration. While visiting Manawatu, one gushing constituent said she was worried the PM might defect to Australia.

Mixing concerns over saving lives over the 'health' of the 'Economy'. Bloody hell we have enough of that here. Granted the measures required to reign in a pandemic obviously impact the Economy. Lives however are far more important.

if the New Zealand economy was any good why are there between 10-15% of their entire population living in Australia?

Ah NZ...land of the long white face...she could eat an apple through a tennis racket...

Apart from the Christchurch massacre, New Zealanders should be feeling pretty pleased with themselves compared to the rest of the world

For a handful of positive test results for a virus that poses no risk to nearly everyone, and that will not go away regardless. Feels like another dimension when I thought she was lovely. You can't banish a virus into non-existence w/ behavioural change. science

why do people have to compare what country is better then another when people die?

Let’s put NZ in perspective compared to Sydney alone: Syd GDP over $400 Billion with 5million plus people. NZ GDP over $200 billion-with just under 5 million. Compared to Qld which has 2 million less people - NZ gdp is less than Qld.

She is being totally ridiculous with this comparison!

Who would have known that being completely paranoid about a virus with an under 1% mortality rate would destroy the economy? Thank God we didn't have these leaders in the past. No cars no planes and surrender to the first invader cause all of these things can cause deaths!

Full marks to Jacinda Ardern

The same Jacinda Arden who wants to lock people just to punish them?

she wouldn't swap places? so at least there are some positives for australia 🤔

Bad is competing the another bad for the less worse position

She constantly feels the need to compare herself with Australia - I wonder why?

Madame Lockdown.

She really need to work on her lipsticks.

jacindaardern is full of crap. NZ has a GDP of less than $300 billion nzd pigmy dollars & about $50 billion in Super Savings. Australia has a GDP of $2.2 Trillion AUD & $3 Trillion in Super Savings only a total moron would prefer to be in NZ's financial position

She truly is a horrendous individual, in every possible way.

Wonder if she’d like to be Premier of Victoria . . .
