In school in the 70’s we were taught about the Maori, visited Maraes, cooked food in hot pools, made our own grass skirts and poi pois, paper mache war canoes among other adventures. There’s a good mix of Maori and English placenames in New Zealand.

I think that is going overboard, but i do agree with increased awareness and teachings in school. Maori language should be absolutely compulsory in school, it is the second language and that would show respect.
