Markets make decisions about whether new coal mines are built and not politicians, Anthony Albanese has said on a visit to Queensland - where it all went wrong for Labor at the election.

Markets make decisions about whether new coal mines are built and not politicians, Anthony Albanese wants Australians to know.

"What it's up to governments to do is to give environmental approvals. That's happened of course at the federal level. At the state level, that's being considered." Queensland Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy, Anthony Lynham, backed Mr Albanese's comments on Adani. Mr Albanese was on Tuesday heading for Caboolture, which sits in the seat of Longman – one of two Queensland electorates Labor lost at the federal election.

Close, all the coal power plants on schedule. This is a government responsibility. Coal Politics Australia

Can imagine labor and libs selling Australia out to the Chinese and anyone else with cash. Adani is notorious for breaking our rules. Hell let’s allow all foreign companies to screw us.

AlboMP if you want to distinguish ALP from LNP, you'll have to take climate change seriously. Leave coal in the ground. It's not 'just one mine'. This will result in the biggest coal mining area in the world. It's exactly the job of govt. to protect our environment. New jobs!

Time to stop the pretence of Labor bring any different to the LNP -and face reality, rusted-ons🙄

Very left wing of Labor. Hasn’t Albanese swiped at The Greens as well? Redefine left wing.

Soft cork

No one is listening Albo and won’t be listening for at least 10 years

Oh dear, is this new Labor?

so why is AlboMP running for government? If he wants to make positive change, shouldn't he just go into business? facepalm

CFMEU been giving Albo his marching orders?

The problem with that comment is that financially and environmentally Adani is going to screw Queensland. Explain how Adani taking ask that water is going to be environmentally sound...

AlboMP well explain what you actually do think GOVTS entrusted with the collective power wealth resouces assets of the people is their RESPONSIBLITY AustralianLabor ALeighMP Bowenchris BOConnorMP billshortenmp sallymcmanus gedkearney unionsaustralia Democracy WHERE

Oh please, not another coward.

Magpie1954nBird Well in the first instance it is, but we're past that. Now it's market forces. Whether the profits outweigh the costs.

It's like that song in 'Cabaret', money makes the world go round, world go round, money makes the world go round. We need to get the financial deals made with Adani made public, I smell a rat here.

And so begins my disappointment with Albo as opposition leader... sad

Actually Albo not true if all of the dodgy Government subsidies required for Adani to come even close to viability are to be factored in. Of course its up to Governments

I guess the market decided your party should stay in opposition? Still think the market is the best indicator on what is best for the greater good?

Regulations around what can be used by industry and private sector, is not merely a case of, 'it works so we'll use it', sure there are safety issues, but take a look at 'Ted Prichard Steam Car' - on YouTube. Also, 'Hydrogen on Demand' or HHO systems, gas is produced as needed.

He's right! Government cannot hand over taxpayer cash to private enterprise, especially when it fails to gain finance because it has no achievable business plan to profit. There must be some huge brown paper bags being passed from Adani to the LNP.

If it's not to governments, why was ScottMorrisonMP and LiberalAus going to give a billionaire a taxpayer funded loan because they couldn't private finance? auspol

He is an idiot. Adani is a private operation and he can't dictate how it spends its money.

This is akin to saying anything goes if there is a market ?

The markets wont touch Adani. The government is giving them our water and our money.

That’s interesting! Consider east coast gas! Government failed to intervene to force a reservation policy. Now the world’s largest gas producer has none for itself at a reasonable price!

If someone is prepared to spend billions to open a coal mine, you can be sure there is a market for it.

and tgeres the issue..the market shld do what it's told.. We elected a Parliament to Govern us..not a fucking market wholly dominated by foreign forces ..wake up to yourself ffs or step aside for someone who gives a shit so we have some hope ..

So Albo why did you oppose. Just let the markets fail. The Queenslanders need to see it fail so they start to see reality.

It should not be markets Albo. It should be dictated by the people. Money and power corrupt decisions so going to the heart of corruption to make a decision demonstrates a profound misunderstanding to deeper needs of the community. We need vision with a long arm and wide scope

Is Albo selling out already?

Yes, well markets will most likely take care of it provided our dumbest politicians don't hand over a taxpayer bailout or build a railway line.

Oh no 🤦‍♀️

Oh, dear

Climate change is the biggest haux of our time

What a cop out! “Every resource company has to follow those rules.' Who makes the rules Your hands are not tied.

Albo 🙄 Thanku next.

Here’s my unsolicited advice, Albo: don’t be wishing-washy. Stick to one ideology and not be swayed by the media and “polling results.” There is nothing wrong with the message of clean energy NOW. Keep driving it home! Conviction has to be firm and CONSISTENT.

1. Queensland did not “overwhelmingly side with the Coalition”, some regional seats did. 2. Labor has already lost votes to the Greens, and this will continue (good) 3. The majority of Queenslanders are anti coal mines

Its a foreign company on our soil, putting our environment at risk and has dubious profitability. Why would the govt be interested? Another question is whether Adani will ever actually pay company tax here? 🙄

Caught between a rock & a hard place The only equaliser for the Adani greed and stupidity will be the climate impact Lets just see how bad things get for mankind over the next 3 years of greedy white mans rule Scomos God will be called on plenty its safe to assume No holy water

Watch yourself Albo...you're blowing it. Even the MUA has broken ranks with the CMFEU to take on Adani. Coal is yesterday. Stand up to Murdoch, Adani, Rinehart and be left not sold out.

Then why offer Adani deals on coal, water and a railway line in the first place?
