| Israel’s military chief says the country will strike back against Iran, with hardline ministers urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “go berserk”. World leaders urged Israel not to retaliate.

“Ideas of containment and moderation are the perceptions that ended on October 7,” national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said in a statement. “To create a deterrent in the Middle East, Israel has got to show that it is prepared to go berserk.”His ally Bezalel Smotrich, the finance minister, said like-minded hardline ministers would “use their full influence” to make sure Israel retaliated.
“In repelling the attack, Israel showed strength and courage. It must now show strength and courage to de-escalate,” Mr Starmer said. He also said it was “a point of principle” that “diplomatic missions must not be targeted or attacked”.President Emmanuel Macron told French media that Iran’s “dangerous” attack was a “disproportionate response” to the embassy bombing.
