Iran-Israel attack: Iran is now caught up in a mess of its own making

Iran has not just escalated the Gaza conflict, it has unleashed forces that will now reverberate on the regime.

But its financial and logistical support of Hamas in the lead-up to the 7 October attack and its ongoing supply of missiles and weapons to the Houthis, not to mention Hezbollah in Lebanon, are all very public.By attacking Israel, Tehran has reduced its options and risks creating problems that will be difficult to extricate from.

Likewise, the January 2020 assassination of Revolutionary Guard Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad by the Trump administration focused regime minds like little else. Throw in undisguised Persian ethnocentrism that diminishes other ethnic groups like the Azeris and the Arabs from the south, these tensions are not going away. And despite what the regime claims, Iranian popular support for Palestinians against Israel is far from clear.
