Australians living overseas describe the decision to reduce inbound flights by more than half as 'shocking', with many saying they don't know if they'll be able to get home.

She said waking up to the news of the "short-notice" changes made her anxious and uncertain about her trip home.

"I worry that I will be left in limbo, wanting to return but continuously being denied entry," she said. Ms Sherman also said having to pay for two weeks in quarantine wasn't something she'd factored into her finances to come home."This is a really large burden on returning Australians, and for me is something I wasn't able to factor into my finances since this change has also been so last-minute.

"I'm thinking, if my business gets shut down again how much savings have I got until I have to pull the plug?" he said.He said if there were lengthy delays getting on a flight home, he "could end up homeless".Katherine and Josh Walker are currently in hotel quarantine in Sydney after managing to get on a flight out of Canada, something Ms Walker said was no easy task."And I can say that as someone who just experienced it ...

The pair said if they had also had to pay for hotel quarantine they probably would've delayed their move home, which was planned well before the pandemic began. What you need to know about coronavirus:

Wow -just wow! I thought Aussies were compassionate and caring-but seems not! We are stuck o/s-why? because the Govt wouldn’t allow us to bring our dog without a 6 mth wait period. No flexibility! Would have been home months ago if we could. And btw-I pay tax in Aus. Be kind!

Australians living overseas have jobs, homes, businesses, employees, non-citizens spouses/children, caring responsibilities, pets etc. I bet everyone commenting “should of come home sooner” still lives in the town where they went to high school.

In Vietnam we had a country lockdown while Australia was open, Aussies couldn't get out. One flight in HCMC on the 4 the of may.....no one could get to. There's still no flights out and people have lost their jobs and Aussies are begging on the streets in Vietnam.

Why did you take so long coming home then? Virus has only been around for 6 months ....

This was a terrible decision.

Its over 3month. If someone want back. He/she already in Australia

These unAustralians are precisely why we are in this mess! If the government had only just stopped all incomings 2 months ago, we’d be all clear by now.

MorpheusBeing Disgusting that PM Scott Morrison is turning his back on Australians returning home. Playing politics with Aussies lives. It’s a *citizen right* to be allowed back into Australia. resignScottMorrison.

their choice to go over there

I feel sorry for them...Being Australian but rejected to go home.

Goverment gave them 5 months to return. As soon as the government makes them pay their own hotel during quarantine they'll stop going out of the country...5 months at a rate of 7000 people a month, how many were stranded overseas?

Should have come home earlier 🤦

Gosh, the call went out months back to “come home now” - there’s no use crying over spilt milk, sorry.

Had plenty of time to come back. All flights other than cargo should be cancelled!

ScottMorrisonMP MarisePayne So many Citizens/PR’s are still stuck overseas from months. You have no idea how hard it is to get a ticket on limited ✈️ from Ind-Aus and you decide to suspend half of flights and charge your own people for a totally overpriced hotel quarantine!

Have had plenty of time to get back

Stay where you are ! Cause if you come back you can't get out .....

To people who think that we waited too long to get back to AUS, perhaps you don’t understand the global situation rn. Flights were limited and expensive, most of the time cancelled. Some people had job and personal commitments and couldn’t just leave right away.

I wonder how many of these Australians who have lived overseas for years suddenly want to come home because it's safer here than where they are currently living. Maybe we should prioritise bringing home the holiday traffic and leave the defectors where they are?

They can still come home but they may have to wait longer, which wasn't a problem for them given they chose not to come home six months ago when they were asked to.

The government gave them notice months ago to make their way home quickly.

Tough shit.

Funny how they say they are screwd but the photos attached are full of enjoyment when their fellow Australians are living in anxiety with job loss, lost of homes, and restricted from seeing their families, and hoping that they live another day COVID-19 free.

With a photo like that there is no sympathy from me lol

Should have come home earlier....suck it up.

Had so much time to get back stiff shit

Should have come home when the PM said to. SIMPLE.......

They’re more likely to get screwed in hotel quarantine in Melbourne ...

Had plenty of time to get back to Australia. So suck it up.

Own fault...they have been told to come home for months...

Stay there no one wants to see that face back home

Tough, you played the odds and now this is how it's panned out

So when the Foreign Minister announced in March that all Australians overseas should come home ASAP, and that the states were footing the bill for quarantine, you thought, nah, I’ll milk it some more. Now they are clamping down, you’re screwed and want to blame someone? Nah

Had plenty time to get their shit together. But too busy drinking to do anything.

Holy shit. The amount of people that obviously didn't read the story is quite staggering. Smdh

IF, some Australians had acted with more commonsense than they did, We would be in a far better position But, NO, they had to do their thing, protest march, breach protocols, flaunt rules 'for what' ? Truly, 'for what', further deaths of many to demand a change, Thanks! For zero!

Stay where you are . We are the worst insular nation imaginable . A nation that does not care that a high percentage of its populace has strong overseas ties . Only where there is a hint of economic gain is an effort imade for international connection . Covid revelation .

Maybe during a pandemic is not the best time for overseas holidays?

Stiff 💩, MARCH the PM said get home, now July.

Wah wah wah.

Oh woe is me.... I had no warning

Yeh, I can't understand how anyone who really wanted to come home hasn't by now.

saifjimmy Plenty of time to get home love, the porch lights have been on for months

Tough Toenails

You watch how quick this changes when they let the foreign students in next month

Bullshit, you’re had more than enough time to get back just chose not to. Unlucky.

I feel absolutely nothing for these idiots. 5 months notice isn't enough? If your there now stay there, cause everyone else in the world is. Don't bring your problems home and add to everyones burdens. Imbeciles the lot of them.

Everything australian has a right to come home..very fucking unaustralian to say they cant.

For goodness sakes people. Covid19 has been raging for months. If your not back in Australia by now your too late. And likely infected. Stay out.

I really can’t believe how unsympathetic many people are. If you have ever lived or worked overseas for long term you will know that you can’t just pack and leave. Last time when I left Australia it took me one whole month to get things organised.

As Aussies who have lived in London for 10’years, we planned to come home a year ago due to a sick parent but have stayed due to job security and no job security in Oz. Just hope we get home in time for the inevitable.

You've had fucking ages to get absolutely no sympathy here man.

Tough luck, time waits for no one. Make the most of what you’re given.

saltsoutloud

There are 327,000 return travelers since March this year. It’s 10th July today, there is a second a wave in Melbourne now. Unless people need to look after sick family members at overseas or other essential things. I can not see why people still have stayed in overseas. COVID19

Liberal voter guaranteed, they do whatever they want with their self serving ignorance and when the shit hits the fan and daddy cant save them they call on their top end mates....

Took long enough. Just the lazy lefty stragglers.

And what are you doing still overseas?

This is unfair. Many expats are going to lose their jobs due to the coronavirus induced economic downtown and will have to return home, which is already costly enough. Now these changes will make it even harder and more costly. Further exacerbating an already difficult situation.

Cruise ships might be the answer here. As long as the journey home is longer than 2 weeks and no cases on board. If any cases en route then passengers and crew quarantined somewhere like Christmas Island.

🧐

Hopefully things would improve here soon and you will be able to come home soon..

In early March Scomo was telling overseas Australians to come home as soon as possible. March.

And what about those needing to come back on compassionate grounds. ie sick parent. Then they have to pay for 2 weeks quarantine. A bit unfair to them.

I mean the guy says he works overseas .... maybe don’t take the job if you need to be in Australia? Or go complain to an airline not. Newspaper

why have they waited so long to return?

How long did you need to get home exactly?

If they live overseas, why do they need to come back at this time?

What part of PANDEMIC did you not understand. I saw where this was heading Dec 2019. Aus gov said come home asap in Feb/March & now you complain about the situation. Too bad. Now you'll just have to wait for a plane ride and pay for your quarantine. This is bigger than just you.

I'm going to lay it out straight here. I have sympathy for those who are locked in their apartments with little or no warning. But I have no sympathy for these people who have had months of warning.

The PM clearly warned Australias to come home ASAP in Feb, flights are not being stopped, but slowed down. People, who have not been here for the last six months need to realize we do not have quarantine room for 4,000 per week. Its might take a bit longer that all.

I mean, it's JULY. They've had at least 4 months to get (AND STAY!) home.

How many of these happy snap holidaymakers, went anyway after being told by the government not go ?

relax keyboard warriors ranting & deciding whether allow/not overseas Australians. Ur opinion is poinless & WONT change things. Overseas Australians HAVE the right to come back to Australia ⚫

This situation was clear at the end of February: this was a pandemic of far-reaching impact.

AUS Government suggest Australia Citizens not to travel abroad or return to Australia ASAP back in March. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Citizenship does not have a time limit on how quickly you have to come home. If they're still Australian they still have the right to come back. Maybe they've spent the last four months saving to afford flights, or been dicked around by airlines, and now there's 2wks hotel costs

I think it should read Australians living overseas fear being stranded when they choose to come home. Well I have some news, there is a global pandemic on, it may have thrown some plans into disarray.

legalisetweed not a picture of a woman at Altitude 1 in Singapore saying 'I'm screwed' omfg

If they're living overseas aren't they already home? No door has been shut to these people returning to Australia, but not on any day they choose.

Really how long ago were they advised to get home. Sucked in stupid.

The world has changed and we must all adapt.

They can still come back, just might take a bit longer. I don’t have a lot of sympathy, especially those who have been overseas for many years in low tax countries making no contribution here. We should also suspend entry to anyone who is not a citizen or PR. No partners etc.

Surely there are regional hotels, airlines and airports that could use the business...the travelers can wait for a regular slot to open, or take that option...just be better about the hotel quarantine :)

Can we start a go fund me to bring them back in first class?

Boo hoo, the warnings went out to come home months ago. Buckle up and take a ride

How much fricken time have you had? Since March!

I just hope this is temporary while Victoria is trying to contain the virus.

oh well

Why did they wait so long. Typical! And now moan about it

Im an expat. I chose to sit this out where I am. That decision was made months ago. I dont see what the issue is here, if you wanted to go back that window was open for months. Deal with it.

We saw this coming back in late January lmao

How long have they warned to return to Australia? Since March.

The covid 19 virus has been brought in to Australia by people returning from overseas and we have paid for their quarantine. It has now spread from quarantine. Please close the door. They are putting others at risk.

Don’t you just love them!!.. stay or go? Not stay and whine

Why would you wait until now to come back? Stupidity, ignorance or arrogance? Too bad now if you get stuck overseas.

No no no Dinosaurs were wiped out cos they couldn't see what was coming...these ppl however are just foolish

If this Aussie is staying at the Marina Bay Sands (in photo) I suggest she downgrade to Orchard Rd area if the stay is longer than expected.

They’ve had their chance. Sit this out OS unless extreme circumstances..

They have had since Mach to get back ,

I’m wondering why they’re overseas right now in the first place given the global situation.

They live in Singapore. They’ve had their job cutbacks, same as everyone. Understandable that flights are hard to come by but it’s not a holiday they are having, they are living there so get on with it.

Only had how long to get home?

Incredible number of bitter and twisted views here. Firstly, we are talking about your fellow Australians. Many of whom have lived and worked overseas for years . Doesn’t mean they have lost their rights here. Are they supposed to throw in their job to satisfy those with TPS?

We don’t want them back.

Tl/dr: “How I inconvenient...”

Honestly did they realize now?

Covid has now been around for months. How could you not travel back to Australia in that time?

They have had months to get back here.

Lol. Enjoy!

If you haven’t done it by now then what do you expect

Sorry you decided to stay in the UK, USA, Dubai Tokyo etc and now want to return to the safe haven of Australia. We will keep it safe through sensible border policies and you can wait a little longer.

If they haven't returned by now, then too bad. Stay where you are or pay through the nose to get home somehow..

First world problems🙄

5 mths wasnt long enough to prepare?

You didn’t think you were screwed in March, April, May, or June?

It’s terrible to dump them overseas. It’s not like they’ve had 4 months to get home...........

How long do they need to come back to Australia ...

you travelled overseas...you deserve it

It is not stranded when government asked to come back months ago and they are not making their ways.

Agree. The Government needs a better plan for quarantine, and cutting off all incoming and outgoing flights from rest of world is a half-hearted policy solution one would expect out of places such as North Korea.

So did you find the ONLY actual Aussie?

Don't worry, we will put the property bids on your behalf. justthink1

Is Australia planning to further destroy the economy based on senseless notions or be in seclusion from the world forever, doing exactly as the intended nefarious plans of the psychopathic globalists? Just ignorant OR complicit?

Why the hell didn’t they come back four months ago?

JFC, so many numbskulls on social media. 'Australians living overseas' They live overseas. They didn't go on holiday and decide to enjoy the warm weather for another season.

Image selection needs work. 'Help, stranded, homesick, broke...' ad nauseum... ...sucking on a pint in a Singapore night-club with view to die for, grinning like the proverbial Chesire...

Question for the haters. Let's say someone had a stable job abroad with a mortgage, kids in school etc etc. Now redundant and has a job offer in Aus. Was it plausible to throw it all in back in March and go home? Just curious.

Sorry precious, the world does not revolve around you

Only the European community of Australians as shown?

Stranded? Uh...just several months passed already to get home. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Just be thankful those flights weren’t slashed when you were halfway here sitting on the ✈️.

All senseless decisions by government mainly precipitated by DicDan's incompetence and moronic 'leadership'.

Why are you still overseas after 6 months?

'If the government didn't know how bad it was a few months ago, how could I?!' I dunno, listen to the hundreds of medical experts that were telling us how dangerous it was and how bad it was going to get all the way back in February?

Why have they taken so long to try to come back?

News right?

Had plenty of fucking time

Probably. Yeah, um February was a while ago 🤷‍♂️

They've had 6 months to get home and haven't bothered, now they're the victims?

Why come back? I’d love To be trapped in Hawaii or Singapore.
