Uncertainty around flights biggest issue for some
"If someone gets sick or you want to see someone, already we're penalised with effectively spending 14 days in isolation at each end," he said.
Last minute cancellations of repat flights from India , we are stuck, no way out , emotionally drained , dont know what to do any more , we cant breath, cant eat, cant think any more , please tell Aus it wasnt our decision to stay back, away from home , we were locked down by gov
To people who think we waited too long to get back, perhaps you don’t understand the global situation. Flights have been limited and expensive, most of the time cancelled. Some people had job and personal commitments and couldn’t just leave right away. Imagine if you were stuck
ScottMorrisonMP MarisePayne So many Citizens/PR’s are still stuck overseas from months. You have no idea how hard it is to get a ticket on limited ✈️ from Ind-Aus and you decide to suspend half of flights and charge your own people for a totally overpriced hotel quarantine!
There's a pandemic on what do they expect?
'Enough time to come home?' HOW? With our own wings? There were lot of restrictions from both sides. And you call us Idiots? At least we dont flood the beaches in lockdown and put others at risk. We are trying hard frm last 4months to fly back asap without running out of our mind.
Well done for bringing the other side of story out !! Bravos!
Sorry. But what empathy do they have for the thousands of locals who lost work and/or their lives because the virus was brought into Australia by travelers. Asking for empathy without giving any is rather rich.
Maybe if the ABC had done a better job they wouldn’t be having this problem.
If you spent your time and money not visiting family pre pandemic its your own fault. Fucking call a wahmbulance seriously.
Stiff shit overseas people.
Should have been home months ago. Stuff them!! No excuse.
If they are not back by now they deserve to be stressed
If they have waited until now to return home then they have waited too long.
Why are Australians still overseas after 5 months of being told to get home. Sorry I say stay there till this is over.
I’m confused they had since early March to come back?
What took people so long to return, this has been official health information, since March
How tf are planes actually still coming in, the virus doesn’t care what nationality you!
If you weren’t concerned enough about the pandemic to come home before now then what’s the issue?
Oh yeah they look terrified. I can't understand why people other than journalists, military and medical are still overseas. I call bs on excuses...
Some the the expat families i know in Asia are really doing it tough. They have had to drop the maid down to 4 days a week. They now they think that the children that have been hanging around the house the last few years, might actually be their's. It's all very concerning.
Why do they still stay in overseas when the government has requested Australian citizens to come home months ago? Do they have dual citizenship? I am guessing most of them are from the US.
There are so many difficult and hard adjustments that COVID-19 has forced on us and this is another one. Ex-pats may not like the decision, but many in VIC don't like the decision that they must isolate and forgo seeing family. COVID19choices
I have sympathy for those wanting to return for compassionate reasons. BUT given the 'greater good' need, I am all for restricting. 'unforeseen emergencies' would only be things like being the absolute only person able to help an extremely sick relative.
It's not as if they haven't been given enough opportunity to return. At this stage everyone should stay where they are.
Australians are a nation of travellers. Of those ,some start or continue their careers overseas. But they are still Australians and are as deserving of the same rights as the rest of us.
As an expat Aussie working and living overseas I also hope they do not restrict the number of flights. While temporary travelers should all have gone home by now it is not the same for expats. Our livelihoods are not in Aus but our loved ones still are.
FFS they've known abt borders since March. Stay where you are now, we're trying to sort out a clustefcuk here
Come home for an emergency agreed but also you left and made the decision to leave 5 years ago for work and change in life style opportunity, so unless it’s for an emergency need to get home basis I’d say follow the rules ....
No surprise the comments here are filled with simplistic cretins devoid of any semblance of empathy.
Quarantine on Xmas island to receive priority repatriation. Fly into military airport then transfer. Tough times.
Hey ABC, where's ya pic of Dan Andrews you usually roll out for covid related headlines?
Why are they even travelling? Its been more than 4 months and everyone who wanted to be back home should have already been there
Why are these idiots still overseas? They have mire than enough time to come back.
For many it’s not simple. I am an Aust citizen yet have a family and career in USA. Do I abandon my family in USA or Aust? I support Aust with the steps they are taking... but none of this is simple.
Read the room! First, I packed up 3 kids, a house of stuff a business and a dog in 5 weeks and moved countries. Some of us dont want interstate travellers, we are over run with late returnees and its caused a second wave in Vic. You will likely pay for quarantine too, good job!
So much ignorance! Not every Australian overseas is on holidays!! Most are working (& have families) & have no option to just up & leave, until they lose their job (due to CV19). Then have no option but to come home or face jail/massive fines in their country of residence.
Hotel quarantine doesn't work, it is not the be all and end all. Home detention should be also offered to those who are able who arrive from overseas.
I think people have to have a fair perspective. I agree these incoming travel limits are inconvenient but it's been 3 months + and the cost and resources required are not limitless
Theu have had 6 months and never bothered, bugger them at this point, they are only going to bring more infection into Australia
Not a surprise, this has been going for months. Slow learners obviously.
ABC can you start reporting on the ethnics of the virus....how it spreads via Genetic contacts and how the wuhan strain died out here in January can you report on the research findings regarding NO VICTORIAN STRAIN OF COVID
So they should. Travellers are bringing C19 into Australia. Stay away FGS! You are potentially killing the elderly.
If they choose to return home they pay for it themselves and pay their own quarantine hotel costs. They’ve had since March.
Given the virus is only a plane flight away, its inexcusable to continue to let international flights in. flights from middle east and China come in, but we can't cross the state borders. Fairs fair...
When the authoritiestold Australians to come home within 2days, they did not consider these things: 1. Various time zones around the world 2. Big distances between countries & long travel time As my loved one is in UK because lack of time, I & others haven’t seen em for 6mths!
Life is about choice. They had their choice.
Astonishing that the National Cabinet is even considering this. The international travel situation is already dire enough without flight caps
They don’t look terrified in this photo...maybe choose a different photo 😆 see COVID19 has been around for a bit so there’s been several (6 months) to make an exit plan...
Let's not forget many of these people were told not to go on holiday, and they flicked the bird. Perhaps it's time to flick the bird back.
They should be home in March. Now stay where you are and enjoy, don't bring back virus to Australia. Time to close the boarder as hotel quarantine is just a joke. auspol
Why didn’t they return earlier
Times have changed. You can't just go wherever you want whenever you want. Opportunities existed to return when the pandemic started but we can't keep importing coronavirus cases. There are societal costs that outweigh costs to individuals. Free movement is what has spread this.
Although I'm worried about being unable to fly home, it would be a relatively short term restriction. It is better to eliminate Covid asap in Australian communities, & get people's lives back to normal. I am lucky that my family can support each other at home without my input.
More abc click bait debate
Bad luck. They've had enough time to get back here.
Does no one else see the problem with this?
I thought the borders were closed three months ago.
How are there still Australians overseas?
It’s a PANDEMIC. All these excuses about I couldn’t leave my job or I need to be able to get back if I need to visit my mother is plain moronic. You made the decision to stay o/s. You were told come back 3 Months ago. You took a gamble to stay. Stop whinging , stay o/s .
You have had since March to return so stop moaning!
Do you think you could have chosen a more appropriate image for this story Ffs what is wrong with the ABC lately?
Many are Aus citizens working o/s, and it's not till they lose that job/ other covid restrictions impact them too much that they decide to come home - hence the continuing arrivals months into the pandemic. Time taken to repatriate would depend on priorities and urgency... 1
It has been some time now since the start of the pandemic. MOST countries have imposed travel restrictions and there has been calls to return home for some time. It is not lack of empathy but rather amazement at the narcissism of the few who think the world revolves around them.
Well why haven’t they already come home?
How long do these people need ?
Australians who are still OS have made their choice. The PM issued a ‘get home’ months ago. If you chose to not do this then reap the consequences now. Many of us can’t see our family even if they are in the next suburb. Zero sympathy for those who chose not to return.
I remember very clearly back in March the PM saying Australians should come home ASAP or face lengthy stays overseas as there was no guarantee of flights or consular support in the future.
There has been plenty of opportunity to come home ...
Well my husband did a contract in Canada in 1979 for a career in Medicine. It was a huge move there and benefitted his career after as saw cases you never see here on 10 years. So in career enhancing jobs overseas they are obligated to stay the distance. A whole 12 months.
No sympathy for you. Too bad.
They cd have been in work contracts, so unable so far to come?
I have not seen my family for 18mths, so I guess I must be 'entitled' 'selfish' for wanting to 'travel' and then return to where my life is (SYD). Just wait until December holidays come and these ppl realize there is no Bali for them this year....
Introducing this inbound cap (in addition to the 2weeks hotel quarantine) does not only impact Australians currently out of the country..No flights in means no flights out..This impacts things like postal services...AUS is closing itself away from the world like noone else
To say that you’ll have no job to go back to is quite a privileged position as many, many people in your home country already have no jobs, failing businesses etc and yet you want empathy toward you & you can’t wait for something to happen to your mum, you come or you don’t.
It’s not the returned travelers causing the outbreaks! Only in Melbourne where the system was flawed. What is wrong with people in this country? Reading comments it’s like we have turned into a nation of ignoramuses. Get a grip.
Please have empathy for Victorians who have to go through lockdown again and those in public housing with hard lockdown. How long you want to plan your life is your choice and if you can't pack and go, stay put. Sorry, we have to cap it.
Time for them to go to bunnings and get some cement so they can Harden the fuck up. You had months.
It’s been over4 months. They had their time. Also they pay for quarantine
It is sad, but that is life. The world changes around us, sometimes in fast unpredictable ways. Deal with it!
It’s a pandemic. Everyone else has had to upend their life, lose their job or suffer in other ways. You had your chance to come home, the government told you to come home months ago. Choices have consequences: you made your choice, now deal with the consequences.
The moat is growing it’s necessary under our current pandemic conditions
You were told weeks ago !!!
The premiers must refuse entry from any country with a worse rate of infection than Victoria or the ABC must call this out for what it is discrimination. All people who do come home must also have to pay for their own quarantine in states that say those returning from Vic must.
Bad luck, you’ve had enough time to sort your shit out, selfish much!
“It’s all about me”!! Entitled much? We’re dealing with a global pandemic. Go away you drainers
Repatriation is a 6 month process minimum for anyone with pets given vaccination requirements. There’s no fast way to do it
Time is up for international flights in. You had your chance and more now close the door. ScottMorrison
They’ve had ably 6 months to return.
Not sure how this will impact VISA Granted folks who are waiting to enter before the IED.
Pretty sure if they were of foreign white blood Anglo ancestry like Australian PM ScoMo, it wouldn't be an issue. But, if they are Australian Natives like us Blackfellas or Australians of Asian ancestry returning it will be a big issue!
what? are they waiting to get the coronavirus, then come home? do they have dual citizenship? we are trying to sort the mess here, not have new cases landing at our door daily.
