John Howard, campaigning in Melbourne on Tuesday, said he is optimistic Josh Frydenberg will see off the challenge from Climate 200-backed independent Monique Ryan and retain his seat of Kooyong.

Former prime minister John Howard says Treasurer Josh Frydenberg losing his seat of Kooyong will be"a great loss for Australia" as he admitted this Federal Election was"harder to call" than any he can remember.

"Josh Frydenberg, more than any other man or woman in Australia, has presided over our tremendous economic recovery and to lose a person such as this, against that background, would of course be a terrible shame and a great loss for Australia," he said. Mr Howard was asked about why the traditional Liberal Party strongholds such as Kooyong and Wentworth are"facing this threat from teal independents, how has it come to this in your view?".

"Now there are people, in some of these seats, who I think have this funny idea that they can sought of send a message to the Liberal party by voting for an independent but still have a Liberal government," he said.

Dreadful if he looses his seat and we are left with Dutton leading the Liberal Party.....a dreadful thought🥱

I doubt howard knows what day it is!

He’s hardly going to say he thinks JoshFrydenberg will lose!!! Go Mon4Kooyong Go Dr Mon VoteJoshOut

Because nothing shouts out 'progressive', and 'moderate' like Howard?

The Budget projects that the Commonwealth government's gross debt will be around $963 billion at 30 June 2022. This is around 45.1% of GDP. Well done Josh.

Rolling out the rodent wint change anything!

A real tragedy it will be if Josh Frydenberg is lost to Australian politics.

Australia told John Howard what we thought of him 15 yrs ago. He was kicked out of office by his own blue ribbon electorate. Interesting he’s the best they’ve got and they’re not rolling out Abbott or Turnbull. Imagine they won’t be rolling out ScoMo for future elections either

Nothing shows desperation than having a conservative former PM greasing the wheel. This only puts off “moderate” voters and reminds them that change is their only option.

And the most accomplished lying war criminal that squandered the wealth of Australia in its most prosperous time.

The countries two worst Treasurers. LNP - Highest Taxing and the worst economic managers

Australian democracy needs reform on donations to politicians & parties, reform on politicians expenses, enforceable codes of parliamentary conduct, political advertising & political appointments & an effective Federal ICAC. Independents have promoted all these, LNP supports none

Victoria remembers.

He is a blind loyalist to the person, not liberal values of moderation , credibility, financial responsibilities, ethics and fairness As the man who played Tampa,Children overboard, pork Barrelling,Howard is the father of current Scomo disease all over the top ranks in govt.

So glad you deliberately use the positive term “Climate” for a candidate as Climate Change policies and action is in the top 1-2 hot buttons for the public in choosing a candidate for their electorate. Look at the Results Board for the current Care Taker LNP Govt - cancelled.

He’s misread Kooyong. WE want him gone. And IF he does slime to a win, he’s inherited a vastly changed and angry electorate who’s not going to give him an inch and who will give him curry. Mark my words. Kooyong has changed. Josh hasn’t. auspol Mon4Kooyong KooyongVotes

Man, these fossils are out of touch.
