Former Prime Minister John Howard remains optimistic Josh Frydenberg can hold the seat of Kooyong and win against independent candidate Monique Ryan, telling Sky News Australia the Treasurer is “popular” and “well known” in his electorate.

Mr Howard has been out on the campaign trail alongside the Liberals, showing his support and endorsement for party candidates.

“I’ve walked around the electorate with him just today, and he’s popular, he’s well known, he’s diligent, he doesn’t take anything for granted,” Mr Howard told Sky News Australia. “Josh is one of those politicians who always assumes that he might lose, and that’s a good safeguard to have. “It’s those who take people for granted who lose and, in some circumstances, deserve to lose, well, that will never be said about Josh Frydenberg.”
