Former prime minister John Howard says he finds this federal election a hard one to call out of the many campaigns he’s participated in.

“I’ve participated in a lot of elections, and I find this a harder one to call than just about any I can recall.

“There are people in some of these seats who I think have this funny idea that they can sort of send a message to the Liberal Party by voting for an independent but still have a Liberal government.Mr Howard said he was “optimistic” about the Liberal Party’s prospect of winning the election on Saturday.
