The details of 10,000 Optus customers have been released following a massive data breach which affected millions of Australians last week. 7NEWS

Among the information accessed were dates of birth, passport and driver’s licence numbers and addresses. The hackers have warned this would continue each day until an extortion amount of $1.5 million is paid.on Tuesday the hardest part for customers will be understanding if you’ve become a victim.

“Unless you are looking through the dark web and trying to find where this is, you won’t know at all,” he said. “Without speaking on behalf of the organisation... hopefully they will start telling people if they pick it up.” “But it’ll be interesting to see what data they actually release, some of it is more sensitive than others, dates of birth and addresses, things like Medicare numbers and passport numbers by themselves are less sensitive if it comes to identity.”

It comes as Australian law firm Slater and Gordon explores the possibility of a class action lawsuit against the telco.

New security measures to be unveiled following massive Optus data breachUnder changes expected to be announced in coming days, banks and other institutions will be informed much faster when a data breach occurs at a company so personal data cannot be used to access accounts. So they say. It's a worry that this is all reactive rather than proactive well we hope so ... after 9 million aussies have had their personal details taken .... for a start they should give us all new licence numbers .. we can't change our birth certificates ... maybe doing business will have to be triple authenticated.

No, Optus doesn’t need to keep your sensitive information for so longSo much sensitive data only had an initial, point-in-time use. This just appears to be data gluttony, and it must stop. how else are ASIO gonna read your texts?! You've got it all wrong. The government shouldn't be forcing them to collect it in the first place. Will the government compensate those that are scammed? And don't forget the data retention act. Time to review its operations now.

Optus hack is the new normThe massive data breach could have happened to any Australian business. Every organisation and citizen has a responsibility to address their own cyber security. BoycottOptus I recieve many calls from people whom did not make the call. OptusHack refuse to allow you to disconnect your number, they switch the number to prepaid, so wrong! boycott 💩 service all round Optus mmm... so how about not retaining all the details once an account has been set up...🤔 then there wouldn't be any data would there 🙄 No. No it couldn’t. Other businesses will be following best practice. And not leaving an unauthenticated api gateway open. That’s clown world. And I’ll bet someone did it as it was too hard to work with security to do it right. So they did it wrong.

No, Optus doesn’t need to keep your sensitive information for so longThe real issue that Optus will have to stare into is why were they holding such sensitive personal information? This just appears to be data gluttony, and it must stop. | OPINION by Rachael Falk Why do you have to produce such documents for a mobile phone service when not even buying the phone? People with disabilities have difficulty with the two factor ID required for the Optus app. Optus insists on Direct Debit and now has compromised security with their over reach. Can’t do much now without giving DL & MC details. They say anti money laundering laws🤷‍♂️ A good law suit should see them trim their data retention habits.
