Under changes expected to be announced in coming days, banks and other institutions will be informed much faster when a data breach occurs at a company so personal data cannot be used to access accounts.

abc.net.au/news/new-security-measures-to-be-unveiled-following-optus-data-breach/101472364The Home Affairs Minister is soon expected to announce several new security measures following the massive Optus data breach that saw hackers steal the personal details of up to 9.8 million Australians.Under the changes, banks and other institutions would be informed faster of a similar data breach

Many in the telecommunications sector blame regulation, including metadata retention laws, for contributing to the breaches Privacy protections currently prevent banks being immediately told about a cyber breach that's relevant to their customers.

There are dozens of companies getting hacked , schools etc. Telcos letting hackers infiltrate

Optus doesn’t care - their lack of customer care shows. OptusDataBreach OptusHack OptusClassAction LeaveOptus

Just let the Home affairs proceed with the security measures asap to protect our personal data. Enough of cynicism, legislation can always be improved pending these never ending investigations, maybe months?.

No condemning Optus for serious breach of security, poor risk management? In fact Optus was praised for pacifying disgruntled customers. Is that how standards of accountability has sunk that low in Aus? The people's personal details can be used illegally for decades to come

, VicRoads refuses to change license numbers even after the optus hack - the link on the top of their website says they will only change id numbers if we have a police report. This is no help at all.

I got an email from Optus CEO. I am going to put my claim to compensate me to change my driver license and passport. I think this is the minimum I can ask for.

all you need is a smart device or a smart phone.

This is how Optus is helping customers currently with concerns about their personal info being stolen - by giving a scripted answer and marking the conversation at 'resolved' before any more comment can be made. Fucking weak Optus!!!

Hahahhahahahah… Now that they have been hacked they are going to do something about security. here’s a tip for all the professor/doctor/geniuses in charge of Optus, you are meant to have world class security in place before before someone tries to hack you.Pathetic!

Hahahhahahahah… Now that they have been hacked they are going to do something about security. here’s a tip for all the professor/doctor/geniuses in charge of Optus, you are meant to have world class security in place before you get hacked.Pathetic!

Bit late ?

More theatre from the “trust us” brigade! I’d prefer to supply all data encrypted so if they want to see it they have to request access. My data on my terms.

Optus needs to ensure they share the data with NZ banks also, because if I got an email from them, there will certainly be more NZers impacted by this data breach using NZ identification documents

Class action

They’re working towards their new CBDC, we won’t have bank account protections, it will be linked to Health and Taxation and Social score, including personal C02 emissions . They want to tell us what food we can buy (bugs anyone) they will decline if you use too much CO2 etc

These online metadata security bills just happened to be in the top draw, like every other western country ? Do they think we are stupid . Obviously this ‘Optus Hack’ is a total lie, being used to justify changing laws forgo protecting peoples privacy. No bank details were taken!

Well I feel so much better given these measures...

Zero trust computing should be the standard anti hacking measure for companies like Optus . Fines and civil damages should follow if they fail to employ 'best in show' safeguards .

There should be a mandatory amount of time given for customers to be notified directly of the breach. It’s now Sunday and I haven’t heard from Optus as yet. Does this mean my data is fine or are they still trying to work it out. Not good enough!!!!!

Great optus have just notified me my data has been taken. Should the government make them pay to give me a new passpot number, a new credit card number, a new drivers license number etc. so my identity can not be stolen,

This is spot on

Why worry about data when huge amounts of Australians gave away their own DNA or signed in to shop... We used to be a clever country.

Who denied the budget/project funding to do it in the first place?

The West may as well surrender to Chinese and Russian rule now, why prolong it.

Stop collecting our data. Problem solved

Hey kids, don't forget to sign up to ABC to get personalized content from government sponsored media outlet. Your data is safe with ABC, it's only 'for internal analytical use and only the ABC had access to the data,'

Please watch this video. We have been behaving like idiots in the West far too long.

the horse, halfway to the horizon, neighs quietly in amusement.

Do the “new” security measures include not leaving a gaping online door wide open into their servers, which is allegedly what really happened according to industry insiders?

Didn’t they already unveil new security measures, before the data breach

Tell the gov to stop collecting OUR data.

Horse gate bolted

THE LAW require telecommunications service providers to retain and to secure for two years telecommunications data (not content); require service providers to protect retained data through encryption and preventing unauthorised interference and access;

Make an API exposing all of your customer data to the public and the solution is to report to more departments next time the same thing happens?

A good start is to ban telcos from having overseas call centres.. once that data is overseas its not covered by Australian law

How about a law that makes organisations like Optus financially responsible for such monumental cock-ups. Massive fines and a claims process for anyone impacted by their actions.

Blah, blah, blah... After spending 20+ years in IT, I can tell you one thing, nothing ever changes without a disaster. I'm almost certain that IT people were warning against this for years, but 'there was no budget'. Suddenly, we have all the money in the world... Same old story.

It's a worry that this is all reactive rather than proactive

well we hope so ... after 9 million aussies have had their personal details taken .... for a start they should give us all new licence numbers .. we can't change our birth certificates ... maybe doing business will have to be triple authenticated.

So they say.

Optus’ response to massive data breach ‘incredibly weak’Sky News host Chris Smith says the massive Optus data leak which compromised the privacy of up to 9.8 million users raises the issue of if customers “can ever trust the security of our utility providers again”. “What was Optus up to, in delaying news of the breach to the public, and then to their customers?” he said. “The government's Scamwatch site says: ‘If you are an Optus customer, your name, date of birth, phone number, email addresses may have been released'. “’For some customers, identity document numbers, such as driver's licences, or passport numbers, could be in the hands of criminals’.” Mr Smith said this leak could make it easy for criminals to commit identity theft but questioned why, if the breach was discovered on Wednesday night, Optus did not make a statement until 2pm Thursday afternoon. “That's an incredibly weak response,” he said. “That delay has clearly allowed hackers, to begin the process of harvesting key data, without customers able to offset those attacks themselves. “And what is also astounding about the way Optus is handling this, is that still today, they don't know exactly how many customers are impacted.” Maybe we should go to burner phones.. We know nobody can trust Chris Smith to keep his pants on ever again ... Still waiting for notification on breech
