Firefighters in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia are preparing for another day of tough conditions as dry and windy weather threatens parts of the country.

Firefighters in New South Wales are preparing for another day of tough conditions as dry and windy weather sweeps across parts of the state. Air pollution in Sydney reached 15 times the hazardous level after strong winds dragged smoke from a nearby fire at Gospers Mountain into the Sydney basin on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Queensland, a bushfire in Pechey flared up on Monday, forcing residents to flee their homes. In South Australia, a total fire ban has been declared as the state prepares for a day of 'catastrophic' fire conditions on Wednesday.
