About 80 firefighters were battling to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring properties in Centennial Park.

Fire has destroyed a multimillion-dollar mansion in Centennial Park in Sydney's east overnight, as 80 firefighters battled to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighbouring properties.

Police and firefighters were called to the multi-storey home on Martin Road about 8.40pm on Wednesday to reports that the property was well alight.Acting Superintendent Nick Andronicos, from Fire and Rescue NSW, said there were about 20 fire trucks and 80 firefighters on the scene battling the fire late on Wednesday.A number of heritage-listed properties are on Martin Road, which borders the western edge of Centennial Parklands.

Acting Superintendent Andronicos said their attempts to stop the fire from spreading appeared to be working. "It's a significant response from us. Our efforts at the moment are trying to keep the fire contained to the house itself and protecting surrounding houses and those tactics appear to be working at this point in time," he said.

Police said no one was believed to be inside the house at the time of the fire, and there were no immediate reports of injuries.Witnesses reported seeing a large amount of smoke over Centennial Park late on Wednesday.
