Ex-AFL boss Andrew Demetriou admits he was silent when minority investors were told James Packer didn’t get special treatment.

The former AFL boss was grilled for a second day at the NSW Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority inquiry, which is determining whether Crown is fit to hold a gaming licence for the $2.4 billion Barangaroo development nearing completion and towering over the Sydney skyline.

“Before any of the independent directors including myself had a chance to speak, Mr Barton had intervened and was giving the answer,” he said. Commissioner Patricia Bergin interjected, saying she got the impression Mr Demetriou was a “very robust individual and that if you wanted to speak your mind, you would do so”.Andrew Demetriou gave evidence to the NSW Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority inquiry into Crown’s fitness to run Barangaroo over two days.Mr Barton conceded at the inquiry last month he should have told the truth about Mr Packer’s special briefings.

. The newspaper also reported he told Crown two years ago it was too focused on complying with gambling regulations at the expense of growing the business, and he had never read NSW’s Casino Control Act.“Oh Mr Demetriou, why did you do it?” Commissioner Bergin said.
