It’s been revealed almost $27 million has been spent reopening the Christmas Island detention centre this year with only four people so far detained at the facility. auspol

“We’ve spent in the region of 30 million to detain four people for a couple of months is that right?” Senator McKim asked.“Senator it wasn’t re-established for the purpose of detaining four people,” Commissioner Outramhe told the Committee.

Australian Border Force Commissioner Michael Outram speaks during Senate Estimates at Parliament House in Canberra. The Morrison government has argued the detention centre was required to deal with sick asylum seekers and refugees on Nauru and Manus Island, who were approved to come to mainland Australia under the so-called Medevac legislation.

The Biloela family, which includes Sri Lankan parents Nades and Priya and their four-year-old child Kopika and two-year-old Tharnicaa are still being held at the detention centre. “There is over 100 hundred staff there for four detainees - is that right?” Senator McKim pressed further.

Opening of Xmas Island detention Its not about the 4 people, it’s the message to the people smugglers.

$30 million it was said in Estimates

Why haven't they been sent home yet

Underfunding NDIS to create a ‘surplus’, and such a marvellous use of public funds this is... but sure, people on Newstart trying to survive on $20 a day are the drain on the public purse ScottMorrisonMP JoshFrydenberg PeterDutton_MP auspol clueless

StefArmbruster Makes you understand why Morrison ordered a strategic review of Home affairs shortly after being elected PM and why knowledge of the review has been kept secret from the public by Dutton.

I‘m curious, what percentage of Asylum seekers are economic refugees?

SumeenaLouise Aren't the 2 kids actually Aussies as well?

27 million to persecute a family of four. But this lot cannot 'afford' to raise Newstart. What a seriously Fucked up sense of priorities this so called government has.

Bring them to Their Friends in AUSTRALIA

Prob waiting for citizens who speak against this fascist govt

You’re spend millions for rubbish programs. Everyone has to obey the law and the law says come from the frond door...

Wasn’t that one of Adolf Dutton’s mental farts?! The far right has a clear tendency towards incompetence ...

Make the shame ... even worse!

ScottMorrisonMP and PeterDutton_MP great job wasting money gents. What a horrific job you are doing.

Fiscal management at its best.

“Luxurious tropical holiday resort”? (Tony Abbott’s words.)

I agree Sbs, it's time we kicked them out for good

Christmas Island is to keep the unemployment rate down.Has nothing to do with asylum seekers, as Australians are led to believe. All detention centres employ thousands on the payroll. Workers are varied, accordingly.

Nearly as much spent on medical. Hundreds brought to Australia. Only 4 admitted into hospital. None returned. What a waste of Money for 4 people.

Imagine actually believing this is anywhere near sane and reasonable.

That could have bought a lot of feed and water for drought-stricken areas, could it not ScottMorrisonMP, PeterDutton_MP?

In the past year, two Australian citizens have been detained in immigration detention due to 'systems deficiencies'The Department of Home Affairs has unlawfully detained two Australian citizens in immigration detention facilities in the last 12 months. As with any law enforcement agency, one needs to look very closely at the standard of recruits. Currently, all agencies appear deficient in this regard. Do the crime, please go directly to your home countries. But the AFP can find the resources to raid the media and whistle-blowers.
