Dr Alan Finkel has defended his position on the use of natural gas after being criticised by some of the nation's leading climate change scientists, saying it would remain one of the nation's key energy sources | npomalley

had written to Dr Finkel, voicing their concern that his support for the use of gas was not supported by scientific evidence about the need for the rapid abandonment of fossil fuels to tackle climate change.

He wrote that greenhouse gas emissions caused by burning coal gas to generate electricity were lower than that created by burning coal, "even when upstream fugitive emissions of methane are included in the analysis". He also wrote that because gas-fired power stations could ramp up faster than coal-fired power stations they did not need to operate for as long to meet shortfalls in renewable power in the grid.

One of the signatories to the letter, Professor Will Steffen, said Dr Finkel had not addressed its key points. "'Fuel switching' from coal to gas is policy based on factors that were at play around the turn of the century or before, not in today’s world and beyond," she said. "The last thing we need is to increase fossil fuel production at a time when coal, gas and oil must all decline starting now in order to stay well below 2°C of global heating.

AndyOz2 npomalley We've got it. Don't need to invent it. Low emissions. What are they complaining about?

npomalley Is he basically a public servant just like the CMO is?

npomalley So per his letter, he believes gas should continue to be available (ie maintain current system), and then states he is not commenting on expanding the gas industry. If he's an expert, he should give his opinion on need vs risks of expansion, if not, defer to AEMO and others.

npomalley How strange: 'Dr Finkel wrote that he has not commented on an expanded role of gas for industry'. The govt is about to embark on increasing fossil fuel use, while ignoring the Paris Agreement, and Dr Finkel has nothing to say? We need evidence and expertise not silence.

npomalley What we are witnessing is the Trumpification of Australia. We see it with Brendon Nelson all the time & senior public servants in senate estimates. If the media believes in democracy (and we really can’t be sure anymore) it needs to be change the way it covers politics. Quickly.

'Expect worse': NSW fire inquiry backs limited use of controlled burnsNSW must prepare for similar or worse years in the future as the climate continues to warm, with increased hazard-reduction burning offering only limited help, the NSW Bushfire Inquiry has found. p_hannam Hazard reduction burning the way the CFS do it is dangerous and causes over 40% of all bushfire and brush fires. It is astounding they have yet to learn anything from the Aboriginals on burn offs p_hannam Damned if you do and damned if you don't p_hannam The bushfire inquiry is as dumb as the nsw government. If Aboriginal people had control of back burning for the next ten years we would have fewer fires. Rural fire service are useless and don't know what they are doing when it comes to back burning.

California's wildfires aren’t ‘unprecedented or unusual’ | Sky News AustraliaEnvironmental policy expert Michael Shellenberger says despite claims California's fires are “unprecedented,' in fact top forest scientists in the US state are all emphasising the blazes are not unusual. \n\n“They say it doesn’t happen every year, that you see fires like this that are started by lightning in the middle of the summer, but it happens every decade or so,” Mr Shellenberger told Sky News host Chris Kenny. \n\nHundreds of houses have been destroyed and thousands of people have been placed under evacuation orders as blazes continues to burn through California’s forests and shrub lands. \n\n“We have to get out of the idea though, that fires are bad,” Mr Shellenberger said. \n\nHe said Californian forests, for the most part, “need fires to clear the underbrush and make room for new life”. \n\nHe said US President Donald Trump has faced criticism for suggesting the forests need to be raked to remove the underbrush. ShellenbergerMD This is what it looks like when like here in Australia, when you have the far left controlling your state, California has around 35% renewable energy and can't even keep the lights on, Wake the F up Australia ShellenbergerMD lol. Good luck golf. Pierik_AgeSport Always amazes me how people that fail at one sport get a walk up shot at another. Kind of like Ralene Castle from rugby, they go from one sport to another under performing but they still are given jobs.
