For less than $1 million a year, the state forensics lab could have continued thoroughly testing samples with lower levels of DNA to help solve major crimes, an inquiry has been told.

For less than $1 million a year, Queensland’s forensics lab could have continued thoroughly testing samples with lower levels of DNA to help solve major crimes.

A figure of 1 per cent was put to Queensland Health, however this only related to “cold links” to the national database. “It was never highlighted to myself, or the advice that we gave to the minister, that the 1 per cent only related to where there was effectively cold-link cases,” Drummond said.A decision to continue processing samples with lower levels of DNA was made in June this year. Drummond began his role as acting director-general in March.

“It’s been worked out [that] it’s less than $1 million per annum to be able to carry on the testing at the pre-2018 threshold.”
