Witnesses alleged the vehicle was stolen by two teenage boys from a tourist campground half an hour before the crash. The managers have provided police with CCTV footage that they say shows the stolen car being driven out onto the Great Northern Highway. Rumours that the second car was chasing the stolen vehicle have fuelled tensions in the local community, but witnesses told the ABC the car was not in close proximity and was not at the scene when the crash occurred.
