Moonee Valley Racing Club has called on the AFL to stage a night grand final if it plays its premiership decider on October 24 - the same date the centenary Cox Plate is scheduled.

This comes as calls grow for the horse racing industry to shift its spring carnival to avoid a clash with the AFL finals, with legendary Channel Seven commentator Bruce McAvaney arguing for the racing industry to move its prime assets to a timeslot later in November.

"As always we will work closely with other sports and the Victorian government in ensuring that we maximise the major events calendar." McAvaney, who calls both football and racing for the broadcaster Seven, told SEN on Monday that racing should move its prime assets to a period that didn't clash with AFL.

The Melbourne Racing Club is prepared to consider radical changes to its signature race, the Caulfield Cup. It would be prepared to stage the world's richest 2400-metre handicap in late November, weeks after the Melbourne Cup should that remain in its traditional date, to avoid a clash with the rescheduled AFL finals."My personal preference is to retain the current date for the Cox Plate," Browell said.

"We all need to be flexible because these are challenging times and the back end of the calendar is going to be loaded up with all this sport, from not just here in Australia but around the world."

The racing industry can, as always, get fucked.

Public have evolved and certainly ready for a night Grand Final. They will never look back when it happens here.

Will be a great spectacle!!

Personally, I don't care what horse flogging cup race is on, anyday let alone Grand Final day.

Moonee Valley can run their races at night if they want to as they do not own daylight TheValley

I would have thought a night Cox Plate would be better for betting turnover & crowds (if allowed)
