Businesses right across Greater Sydney are enduring one of the toughest lockdowns Australia has seen since the pandemic began and unlike the restrictions imposed last year, hairdressers have now also been forced to shut their doors.

Hair Salon owner Natalie Anne says the government support is helpful but there is a “fear of the unknown” as to what will happen after the lockdown is lifted.

“Anything the government is going to give us right now is definitely going to help but it’s never going to, I guess, compensate for the loss of income over weeks of lockdown and the emotional trauma that it’s causing small business,” she told Sky News Australia. Ms Anne said she had seen a “domino effect” from last year’s lockdowns and economic disruptions and it is uncertain whether customers will return even after the lockdowns have been lifted.

“There is that fear when we do go back to work, are we going to be busy enough, are people still going to be scared to come to the hairdresser or, you know, have a wedding, or get a coffee.” “It’s that fear of the unknown and the uncertainty that is affecting us going forward that, I think, is going to affect us financially and emotionally.”
