While former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg had a disappointing debate, his candidacy is still viable because "money talks" in presidential elections, according to former Labor minister Stephen Conroy. Mayor Bloomberg appeared for the first time onstage at a Democratic debate, as voters prepare for the Nevada caucus.

Bloomberg has surged in the polls, spending well in excess of 200 million on television and online advertisements, dwarfing his Democratic rivals. However, he was widely seen to have had a bad night, with progressive firebrand Elizabeth Warren attacking his criminal justice record and his history regarding sexual harassment. Mr Conroy said Mr Bloomberg can "come back" from his "flat-footed, under prepared" debate performance.
