Australian cyber agents helped to win battle against ISIS. MikePBurgess: We were able to knock out their communications... and it had great effect supporting the war fighter. MORE: speers

Australian intelligence operatives played a key role in the battle against ISIS in the Middle East, it has been revealed.

Agents from the Australian Signals Directorate were able to knock out the command and control networks of militants ahead of a coalition operation, meaning the terrorists were unable to communicate with each other while under a sustained attack. It's thought to be the first time an offensive cyber operation has been conducted closely alongside military officers in the field.
