US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces say they have 'totally eliminated' ISIS after it declared a battle in the final Islamic State stronghold of Baghouz to be over. The Kurdish-led SDF have claimed 'all territory in Syria is now clear of IS fighters'.
At the peak of its power, Islamic State-controlled a third of Syria, terrorising those in the country and inspiring attacks around the world from their base. While the victory is complete, there are still areas that will need to be searched for IS fighters who have gone into hiding as sleeper cells.
