Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the new alliance with the US and UK “aggravates the arms race and hurts the international non-proliferation efforts”. submarines aukus

China has declared the new defence pact between Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom “gravely undermines regional peace and stability” while branding Australia’s acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines a damaging setback to global non-proliferation efforts.

Along with the nuclear submarines planned acquisition, Morrison said Australia wanted to enhance its arsenal with long-range US Tomahawk missiles.Loading “Australia is a non-nuclear weapon state party to the NPT [non-proliferation treaty] and a party to the nuclear weapon-free zone in the Southern Pacific. Now it is importing nuclear-powered submarine technology with strategic military value. The international community, including neighbouring countries, have reason to question its commitment to nuclear non-proliferation. China will closely monitor the situation.

Morrison said he had called outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and India’s Narendra Modi about the enhanced security pact and was ringing Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Thursday. But Evan Laksmana, a political scientist with National University of Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, revealed there was consternation in Indonesia, Australia’s near neighbour and the largest country in south-east Asia.

Absolute hypocrites... China. The most blatantly aggressive country there is, who play word games and money as financial abuse.

So now we are not allowed to create alliances with other countries? We have to go through China for everything? When did China become our boss? Are we a subsidiary of China?

You have been undermining regional peace with the South China sea, Trade wars etc. You are no innocent.

Think best to ignore China and make them the most insignificant trading partner.

So, we need to spend astronomical amounts of money on these subs, seemingly in response to rise of China....and yet it's fine to lease out a whole port to China!

Nuclear subs undermine regional security when they have 70.

Again it's about propulsion and nothing to do with weaponary

The Age and it's parasitic groupies are most disturbed by today's announcement. Long love the majority......

Of course China's actions in the South China Sea doesn't aggravate the arms race and hurts the international non-proliferation efforts - or does it?

That's funny China, such a good sense of humor, China have 74 operational Nuclear 'armed' Subs and possibly 12 more being built, but Australia threatens world safety with maybe 6 Nuclear 'powered' not armed subs, yeah right China you are a total joke.

Sounds like war.

Said with a straight face as the CCP runs roughshod over small nations in the South China Sea.

China is always trying to leverage any perception of antagonism by the west to justify its continual buildup in the Pacific & of its military. Who didn’t see this predictable bullshit response coming?

Ni Hao Zhao, who gives a shit what you think.

This just shows how China baby is just winging and crying and flapping hands… seriously they need to bet better than just throwing hands in air like a baby come on zlj517 you can do better than this 😂😂😂

Predictable Chinese response. They never change!

Is there a bigger knob in the world than this bloke?

I thought the non-proliferation was around nuclear weapons, not nuclear power (even if it is for a submarine)?

So Australia have gravely undermined regional peace? Righto mate.

What rubbish. Any decent army would spend money on drones
