Breaking: China says the new AUKUS defence pact “gravely undermines regional peace and stability”, while branding Australia’s nuclear-powered submarine plan as a damaging setback to global non-proliferation efforts. defence AUKUS nuclear | ...

China has declared the new defence pact between Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom “gravely undermines regional peace and stability” while branding Australia’s acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines a damaging setback to global non-proliferation efforts.

Along with the nuclear submarines planned acquisition, Morrison said Australia wanted to enhance its arsenal with long-range US Tomahawk missiles.Loading “Australia is a non-nuclear weapon state party to the NPT [non-proliferation treaty] and a party to the nuclear weapon-free zone in the Southern Pacific. Now it is importing nuclear-powered submarine technology with strategic military value. The international community, including neighbouring countries, have reason to question its commitment to nuclear non-proliferation. China will closely monitor the situation.

Morrison said he had called outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and India’s Narendra Modi about the enhanced security pact and was ringing Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Thursday. But Evan Laksmana, a political scientist with National University of Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, revealed there was consternation in Indonesia, Australia’s near neighbour and the largest country in south-east Asia.

It shows the immaturity and naivety of a nation that wants hegemonic regional power. They wanted a seat at the big table; now they have to follow the international order. Challenging the status quo undermines the stability if the the Indo Pac.

Hypocritic, you can arm yourself with anything but the countries around you can't.

What about buying off islands, setting up bases, bullying on the sea routes, bribing the leaders of small island republics in the Indo Pacific? With dubious intentions? Does that not 'gravely undermine the peace and stability in the region?'

Waste of money when there are US military camps surrounding China.

But yet china building up its military doesn’t undermine regional peace. Of course china thinks it owns everything

'a damaging setback to global non-proliferation efforts.' from the country currently building its own Nuclear Submarines, several Nuclear powered aircraft carriers while also testing new ICBM's intended for Nuclear armament. Translation 'It's only OK when we do it'

The ABC are most concerned that their China will be disadvantaged. And Chairman Dan is in hysterics.....
