Australia to get nuclear-powered submarines, scraps $90b plan to build French-designed subs

Australia, the United States and Britain are expected to jointly announce a new trilateral security partnership on Thursday, with a focus on aligning technology and regional challenges.

In 2017, the Turnbull government announced French company Naval Group had been selected for this country's largest-ever defence contract, to design and build "regionally superior" conventional submarines. In a highly unusual step, the Prime Minister also invited Labor leader Anthony Albanese and three of his senior shadow ministers to be briefed on the plan.

Another senior official said "top secret" briefings have been arranged at the Defence Department on Thursday. The ABC has been told that news of Australia's decision was instead delivered to Paris by the secretary of the Defence Department Greg Moriarty.

'Perfidious Albion' & 'The [Brit'] Empire strikes back'

Seriously do we really need these submarines? Better off spending the money on our healthcare and hospitals. Fighting the pandemic is where the government ScottMorrisonMP should focus on. Not joining parade with the big bullies. COVID19Aus COVID19Vic

I reckon Australia should build a Space Station why nuclear Sub when future wars are fought in space. Why do backward looking?

More waste from the most wasteful government in Australia’s history. auspol

Can't we spent half that on social services and education?

This is disgusting and infuriating. The LNP is dangerous

Very good decision. Nuclear powered subs should have been decided from the outset.

How is the RAN planning to crew Nuclear subs with personnel shortages and zero experience with nuclear reactors? We have one reactor in Australia and that’s for medical isotopes/research and uses open pool light water, not something that fits in a sub.

More bungling by the LNP who said Oz was incapable of building subs. Then the LNP stuff up the French contract. So who has been caught with their pants down again? Checkout Australia's deficit from the time the LNP came into power. LNPfail

Given the number of nuclear Bombs exploded in Australia and the ongoing doggy like commitment to the UK and US this all makes sense. I wisk they would focus on CANZUK instead.

Ya know, it REALLY doesn’t help anything when an Australian spokesperson jokes that the first sub should be dubbed the ‘Xi Jinping’.

Remind me again how the LNP are better with money. I keep forgetting.

FatherBob We need firefighting water bombers before we need these nuclear powered submarines which will double in price or be outdated before they are even completed. Who wanted these? Electioneering!

The moment one war is over we are getting ready for the next one.Joining up with the U.S. again after the Afghanistan disaster that took 20 years and failed, Iraq failed Vietnam failed. By repeating the same mistake over and over is a sign of insanity isn’t it? Warmongers

Exit Afghanistan = armourment industry diversification.

China's great nightmare

Another e.g of Ministerial incompetence. Westminster Ministers are appointed via the ‘old boy’ NW, to people without knowledge, experience or skills related to their portfolio. The yanks & others appoint the best from each area. Time to change, as elected ≠ skill or competence

How much have we spent in recent years on sub deals

When did we agree to have nuclear in Australia? And have we learnt absolutely nothing from blindly following the US and UK? Sacre Bleu!!!

I guess another $90 billion on civilian nuclear, and electric emissions will drop to ~zero. (90/4 = 22 GW) if they get the Russians and the Chinese to build half each. Rosatom are building for less than half that in China.

They finally got their plutonium-239 source to combine with their 'space' agency and missile tech deal. This was always their plan.

CURIOUS TIMING🤔 Election Coming Soon🗳 Cue dramatic change in LNP submarine debacle. Morrison&Co scuttle the whole French deal to ANNOUNCE a sabre rattling move w/ USA & UK for nuke subs to show off a muscular militarism that the LNP know is red meat chum to attract RW voters.

Money better spend on climate change!

So how much money did we lose on the French subs contract ?

Defence spending, scaring stories of foreign threats. Anyone smell an election?

Has Scott yet again wasted tax payer money

And Boom just like that. porters one million dollar anonymous donation is off the headlines.

Yep ok. Let's get back to Porter ...

President of Australia, as well as the US, 'Joe Biden is expected to make an announcement…'

Aus is following the U S in offensive military capability.Amphibious assault ships and subs, are for taking war to other regions.$270B for Ship based anti ship and anti missiles, missile systems are not for defence. Land based missile systems are. A defence only ADF is needed.

So it’s OK to use nuclear power in submarines, but not to prove power for the whole nation ?

It's about time. We're finally growing up.

About time they got it right, wasted billions over the years on third rate military equipment, Collins Subs we’re useless. Nuclear Subs then hopefully Nuclear power stations. Clean and efficient.

Finally some good news 👍

Hell of a dead cat.

LiberalAus We aRe GrEAt eCOnmIC MAnAgeRS

Now, let’s go nuclear energy!!

Yeah that’s exactly what we need instead of purpose built quarantine buildings or help for people losing their jobs and businesses or boosts to healthcare, don’t forget about education…

Because somebody is getting kickback

And do what with them ? Go fishing ?

Announced around midnight AEST? USN under RAN flag of convenience? And BTW when will we hear how much it cost to test the water & then break out of the $AUD90bn contract with the French DCNS?

And how much are these? Also $7.5billion a piece? Complete madness. And makes us a target. That is what happens when a weak leader and a defence minister suffering from delusion of grandeur get together. At taxpayer’s costs, mind you!!!

Goes completely against comments made by Naval staff at the Senate inquiry.

Getting nuclear subs as a response to the ‘deteriorating strategic environment’ seems a funny approach to managing the self-absorbed, jingoistic, sabre-rattling colonial nationalism that helped generate that situation in the first place.

Great move. Inevitable necessary.

About bloody time.

Australia should pull it together on the covid front before war mongering.

I hope there was a walk-away clause from the French $90b contract. It was originally $50b, over many years. How much did it really cost taxpayers to walk away? Will the payout impact the next economic report? No, paid by a blind trust.

So what happens to the no doubt significant $$ already paid?.

Unbelievable

How much did it cost to get out of that contract 👀

Dutton torpedoes Malcolm's sub.

Aww another war is brewing...

What about all the jobs in SA Vic & WA?

Fark. I don’t want nuclear shite here, esp at my local (beach). SenatorJordon ?!

Finally

Good decision, we can't go through another JSF shemozzle

About time

So do I understand this correctly the that deal that was to save every Liberal seat in South Australia by building the French design pieces of crap in Adelaide was a waste time and money. This is very government that was critical of labour’s finance credentials.

Debacle from start to finish wonder how much compensation will be paid ? Confidential 😂😂😂

The French are happy as hell with the sweetheart deal they got from the liberals, they did nothing and still get paid out.

So instead of investing in nuclear energy we are investing in nuclear submarines? How far away is the election again?

Better than previous French subs deal

Seems pretty based. Should use them to flex on the Kiwi's stupid nuclear-free zone.

Not happy about nuclear? If they are based in SA, will the locals be happy? Unable to visit New Zealand.

Well that was another waste of money! The LNPfail keep throwing money away! What a disgrace! auspol

slackbastard don't worry, we'll fuck it up somehow. maybe run one aground on the fucking barrier reef or something

BS Collins class are hitting end of life, there are current personnel shortages, let alone retraining an entire fleet, developing nuclear maintainer stream & the training systems. All with absolutely zero subject matter expertise. The lead time would surely leave a capability gap

Great news.

Commen sense. I didn't see that coming.

CovertShores about as much of a conformation as you'll get until the Biden announcement

Ok. What due diligence, costs, benefits, risks analyses has Morrison & Co. done on this? I'd like to see those & the costings... fm someone competent w/ numbers pls - so, not the treasurer. Any new deal(s) shld only be signed by the govt winning the upcoming Federal election.

Morrison has just put a huge target on Aust for a nuclear strike. It will also allow China to scare the shit out of Asian partners about Australia's new capabilities. Crazy stuff.

Surely we need vaccines not subs...

I’ll byte my tongue. Gave the government a lot of shit on buying diesel subs only so they can cancel the order, not upgrade it to nuclear.

They fucked up the purchase the first time, my bet is they fuck it up again.

Top news. 👍 It’s about time Australia went nuclear. We also need several nuclear power plants… to fight climate change.

Really, why is it that just about every time the Australian Defence Department tries to procure something outside the US Foreign Military Sales ( US FMS) system everything turns to sh1t?

About bloody we had a modern navy thx PeterDutton_MP

Julian Assange Wikileaks please expose the story

Do we get back the money we have spent? Cause I am thinking if we spent $300,000 buying 5 tinnes and some shot-guns, shells and kevlar, we would have purchased more defence capability then we have thowing away $1Billion plus and coming out with nothing at all.

Wait for the details in the contracts to be visible judging from the last

Faaaark, I mean the Frogs had it coming, but really?

So the LNP government wasted several years and hundreds of millions (billions?) by making the wrong call and changing their minds? Sounds about par for the course.

Good news

My bingo card didn’t even have ‘nuclear foot-long subs’

Called it 🥴🥵🥵🥵🇦🇺😂😂 Have we had enough yet? auspol ScottyDoesNothing

No subs on a dead planet.

Australia a ‘laggard’ as coal projects collapse worldwideThe pipeline of planned new coal power stations is rapidly drying up even as Australia sees a rich market for its exports. Get out the mines are closed. 1,100 new coal fired power stations globally with a lifespan of 40-50yrs, 1,000GW in China alone. Plenty of customers for coal.
