US Studies Centre Senior Advisor Jared Mondschein says “so far Australia has done pretty well in sticking with its principles” amid rising trade tensions with China but “things are definitely getting tougher and more challenging”.

Mr Mondschein told Sky News it was “a constant balancing act” for Australia to manage relations both with China and the United States. “What you’re seeing right now is more economic coercion,” he said. “The tension at the heart of this is that China is prioritising political control over economic growth.

“China has been trying for many years now to gain more influence in the region by all means necessary, it has tried to offer both carrots and sticks. “The coronavirus has really shown the true colours of a number of leaders and countries and unfortunately the true colours of some are not so pleasant to see and what you’re seeing right now with this wolf-warrior diplomacy from China is a pretty hoping and transparent economic coercion.

China trade risk a decision for business: PM | Sky News AustraliaPrime Minister Scott Morrison says Australian businesses will need to decide if trade with China is now a riskier proposition as tensions heat up between the two nations. \n\nSpeaking at the National Press Club on Tuesday, Mr Morrison spruiked the benefits of free trade with China, harking back to earlier comments warning against a rise in protectionism amid the coronavirus crisis. \n\nBut on the decision of risk, Mr Morrison said that was a judgement only businesses can make. \n\n'I think that’s a judgement Australian businesses can only make. And, like any business, they have to weigh up the security of the markets in which they sell to. And the risks that are associated with those,' Mr Morrison said. \n\n'And those risks will move, from time to time. They’ll ebb and flow. And we would like to see stable, reliable, dependable markets all the time for our products and services.\n\n'But those are not decisions that governments make for businesses, be they primary producers and exporters or be they resources companies or industries or, indeed, service companies working in the aged care area on training or things like this.\n\n'But businesses have got to weigh up those risks and make those assessments. Austrade can assist with those things on the ground.” ScottMorrisonMP You fight bullies by punching back. Pompeo casts doubt on Hong Kong autonomy from China | Sky News AustraliaUS Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says he no longer believes 'Hong Kong maintains a high degree of autonomy from China' as the future of trade between Hong Kong and the US is placed in doubt.\n\nUnder laws passed last year, the United States must certify Hong Kong remains separate from China or it risks losing its beneficial trading status. \n\nUS officials will now determine whether to impose sanctions or other measures on the city.\n\nIn Hong Kong, police have arrested at least 300 protestors as they flooded streets to voice anger over China's new national security legislation.\n\nThere's been an international outcry over Beijing's proposal with fears it would spell an end to freedoms in the semi-autonomous territory.\n\nThere was a heavy police presence around the legislative council as they debated a bill that would criminalise disrespect of the Chinese national anthem.\n\nImage: AP mikepompeo I'm sorry what? The british gave Hong Kong back to china... This just shows how American propaganda works. Imagine if china started making claims about how America treats Puerto Rico? Or maybe they have words about Gauntonimo bay in Cuba? America has no moral grounds to stand on. mikepompeo Rather then learning from the success in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the CCP always prefers to fallback to the mantra of being a genocidal regime that rather lie, threaten, coerce, bully, steal,..their way to prosperity. It is time to cease all international business with this regime!

'Sinister intentions': China ups stakes in Belt and Road stoush with Dutton attackThe Chinese government has lashed out at Australian critics of its Belt and Road infrastructure deal with the state of Victoria with a fresh attack on a senior Morrison government minister. billbirtles If China introduces its draconian regulations over Hong Kong what respect would they show Victoria to achieve its own ends. billbirtles 'Sinister intentions' and 'Belt and Road' in the same sentence looks about right to me. Instead of criticising Dutton, China should maybe ask advice from this sage of social order on how Hong Kong could deal with protestors, eg cutting welfare payments and imposing mandatory jail sentences for protestors who disrupt traffic.
