Donald Trump has come face to face with several enemies in court, including the prosecution's star witness, whose scathing evidence is continuing. But this week, there were some friendlier faces in the courtroom too.

Welcome back to your weekly update on US politics, where North America bureau chief Jade Macmillan catches you up on the biggest developments in America as we hurtle towards election day in November.According to the former president's once-loyal aide Michael Cohen, it involved lying and bullying others for the man he used to call 'Boss', in order to sort out whatever was asked of him.

Cohen is considered the star witness for the prosecution and his highly anticipated testimony sought to directly implicate Trump in the alleged hush money scheme., with Trump's lawyers highlighting his own criminal past and public commentary to paint him as a liar bearing a grudge in the wake of a famous falling out.Risk and revenge on the witness stand

They also sought to attack his credibility more broadly, pointing to his past convictions for tax and campaign-finance charges and lying under oath. It's not yet known whether that will involve putting Trump himself on the stand, given it's a potentially risky move and he's not under any obligation to testify. But that hasn't stopped his political supporters from lining up outside the courthouse to attack Cohen instead."Does any reasonable, sensible person believe anything that Michael Cohen says? I don't think that they should," Ohio senator JD Vance said earlier this week.

Scott Morrison is in the US to promote his new book, with another former PM Kevin Rudd hosting a launch at the Australian embassy in Washington. But he stopped by Manhattan first for a catch-up with the former president, which he described as nice, "especially given the pile on he is currently dealing with in the US".

Scott Morrison said he was pleased he could be a friendly face for Donald Trump while he was enduring a "pile on".'Hyperventilation' about AUKUS submarine fears is unfounded, Morrison says after Trump meeting
