Donald Trump has indicated solid support for the AUKUS submarine deal, according to former prime minister Scott Morrison, who met with the former president at Trump Tower in New York on Wednesday AEST.

| in Manhattan, squeezed in a meeting with Mr Morrison, who earlier this year quit Australia’s parliament to join a defence company run by former Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo.alongside current US President Joe Biden and former UK prime minister Boris Johnson just after Mr Trump left office in 2021.

The two former conservative leaders last met in 2019, when Mr Morrison was afforded an official state visit by the then-president, including all the pomp and circumstance of a welcoming ceremony on the south lawn of the White House and a state dinner with 100 guests, including Lachlan Murdoch, Anthony Pratt, Kerry Stokes, Gina Rinehart and Andrew Forrest.

Mr Morrison said the discussion focused primarily on the Indo-Pacific, the “escalating threat of violence in the Taiwan Straits” and the need to continue the work to establish and maintain “a strong, credible and effective deterrent in the region to People’s Republic of China aggression, especially in relation to Taiwan”.

, which he will launch at the Australian embassy in Washington on Wednesday alongside ambassador Kevin Rudd and other dignitaries, including Mr Pompeo. Mr Trump mentioned earlier this year he was preparing to introduce a new 10 per cent trade tariff on all imports to the US if elected. While the policy detail is thin, some have shown concern that this could have included Australia, which enjoys a Free Trade Agreement with the US and special treatment on steel and aluminium exports.
