Indifference, boredom, not happy, not sad, not thriving, maybe struggling, just meh. Are we all burning out, not in a spectacular or interesting way, but in a quiet, stifling smoulder? | Opinion by bairdjulia

called languishing the neglected middle child of mental health. He described it as feeling “as if you’re muddling through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield”.

It has long been assumed burnout was the province of the hard core, driven professional: the lawyers, doctors, teachers, academics. But now psychologists are pointing out that burnout can occur on the home front too, especially for carers. .Professor Gordon Parker, Gabriela Tavella and Kerrie Eyers argue that we need a deeper understanding of burnout; it’s not just lack of energy, exhaustion, a sense of mental detachment from your job and loss of productivity.

You are also probably a dedicated worker. According to science writer Ulrich Kraft, burnout “tends to hit the best employees, those with enthusiasm who accept responsibility readily and whose job is an important part of their identity”. Those who see their work as a calling are also more susceptible. Then there are the type A personalities whom Parker calls “exemplary hamsters, running endlessly within the wheel”.

bairdjulia Public servants have been on home holiday on full pay…..I can see how they are suffering from burnout. Good on the Age for calling out these poor victims of the public service.
