The Victorian government says it will introduce legislation that will force anyone told of child sexual abuse in confessional to be subject to mandatory reporting laws. 9News

The Victorian government says it will introduce legislation that will force anyone told of child sexual abuse in confessional to be subject to mandatory reporting laws.

Any adult who forms a reasonable belief that a sexual offence has been committed by an adult against a child under 16 is obliged to report that information to police, failing to do so is a criminal offence However, religious confessions are currently exempt from the “failure to disclose” offence if information about the abuse is revealed under confession.

Victorian Attorney-General Jill Hennessy said the legislation will also look to “take away the legal defence of the confessional as a reason as to why people ought not to report child sexual abuse”. “I’m hopeful that I will get that legislation into the parliament by the end of this year,” Ms Hennessy said.Members within the Church have recently come out saying they will not adhere to a change in the law requiring priests to report confessions of child sex abuse.

What an other brain fart by politicians who have now idea. How is it going to be policed,I believe in confession it’s the individual confessing and the priest no one else so who is telling the truth . Absolute wombats!!!!

Confessing to a priest is not scriptural

That won’t work going forward. People will then only confess a sanitised set of their sins being aware the ‘seal’ is broken. The result will be the worst sins remain hidden & the priest is not able to provide any guidance to the individual. I’m not sure if this is a better outcome

Dear Andrew, your defence of George Pell makes a mockery of survivorsClare Linane, the wife of a survivor of child sexual abuse, has written an open letter to columnist Andrew Bolt, one of Cardinal Pell's most prominent defenders. What utter nonsense. theboltreport's defense of Pell gives much needed voice to the very real doubts a sizeable proportion of Australians have in the integrity of our legal system. auspol theboltreport Bolt is a pustulant boil on the arse of humanity. Lance it and move on. It does no such thing. It’s perfectly legitimate to challenge things if it looks like the rule of law was undermined.

Our Church has been grievously wounded from the evil of sexual abuseIt feels like we have reached Golgotha, where the smell of death is thick in the air, and the sense of panic and confusion is pervasive. Religion is an outdated tool that managed ancient societies. Humanity is slowly maturing and moving on. The Catholic church has reached Golgotha and is not relevant in todays society.People can see through all this Not as grievously wounded as the victims of of evil sexual abuse. The populace in general doesn’t care about your church, but cares about the many children who have been raped. Stop the self-pity, and start helping the victims!

'Grievously wounded': Archbishops tackle Pell child-sex abuse conviction at Sunday massMelbourne Archbishop Peter Comensoli acknowledged the damage the revelation of Cardinal George Pell's conviction on child sex abuse charges had wrought on the church, while Sydney's Archbishop also spoke on the issue. I think that one or two children may have been 'grievously wounded' as well. What soul? The soul of the Catholic Church is non-existent in my opinion. If there was a soul in the church, there would have been a vastly different attitude towards the commission on childhood sexual abuse, and their clergy would have shown extreme compassion and remorse.

'Vanilla' child sexual abuse comments were 'profoundly damaging''Minimising' impacts of child sexual abuse causes more trauma to victims, advocates and survivors say. Maybe he is as disgusted as every body else at the heinous entity he represented and was expressing how George views his ways as no big deal. Either that or he is one himself. Could be a good explanation for why he was found guilty; a very stupid lawyer. Vanilla is a very popular flavour, especially in the inner city. The abuse is 99% of the problem. The flavour is less than 1%
